Interesting shots you get in the front seat. 1000ft doesn't look like much from that perspective.

Definitely a great perspective. I have never seen another aircraft that close while in the air. Pretty neat.

1700 feet/sec, that's closing speed, right. Otherwise if that's just the speed of the 737, that works out to 1159 statute MPH. Ooh, screamin!!!

Yes, that is closing speed. If you consider the velocity of both aircraft, it doesn't give you a very wide time window to get the shot.

I hope I never see another plane that close when I'm flying. Why is that plane so close to you?

It happens all the time, most people are just not aware unless they happen to look out in the brief time such a passing is visible. The rules and the FAA dictate 1000' of vertical seperation, and due to the accuracy of navigation it is common to have very little lateral seperation between two aircraft going in opposite directions on the same airway.
Don't worry, it's all been worked out and we have neat electronics to warn of an impending conflict and transmit an immediate evasion resolution to both aircraft.

That looks more like a 777. With RVSM, you can get a really close look at a passing A/C. Best I seen was a 747 head on 1000' below us. Thanks for sharing with us.
