My first question is whether or not you think canon plans to release a successor that will be better or cheaper (and equivalent) to the 580EX anytime in the next few months.

My second question is when you use the battery grip on the rebel, do you not load batteries into the main compartment? Because if you did then you wouldn't double your battery life with the grip, you'd triple it.

Can't answer your first question because my grandson dropped my crystal ball so it's not working anymore. ;)

But re your 2nd question, the way the battery grip works is, there's a part on it that actually goes into the battery compartment to connect with contacts in there (that's how the power from the batteries in the grip gets to the camera. So, no, you can't have batteries in the camera battery compartment if you are using the battery grip. :)

As for a replacement to the 580EX, I don't see that happening any time soon.. they get replaced much less often than bodies do.. The 550EX was introduced in 1997, and the 580EX replaced it in 2004. That's a 7 year difference, which if Canon kept consistent (hah!) that would mean 2011.. I wouldn't worry about it.

Great. I think I've had about (seriously) 30+ questions on various photographic items that have been answered through this forum and I am now ready to make my purchase tonight! I'm so excited.

The 430 is much better VFM - do you really need the extra power?

What does VFM mean?

Did you lose Digital Photo Professional (DPP)? Get it here (external link). Cursing at your worse-than-a-map reflector? Check out this vid! (external link)
