How did i do? This particular venue is really dark and dingy inside so all were shot in manual, the 2 indoor ones @iso 1600, shutter speed 1/400 aperture of f1.8 and the outdoor one was iso400 1/500 @f2.8.... and all in AIservo.... i usually pre-focus on the jumps and shoot as they jump but i'm trying now to get the hang of panning with the subject in AIservo..... anyway, feel free to give some critisism.....

The first one is great. I like how the white of the horse's sun-lit head pops against the green background. Exposure looks off on the other two.

Yeah your probably right about the exposure on the others, it was tuff to get a good exposure in that place - clearly didn't manage to get one at all :(

i metered off the arena surface to over expose by about +3/4 but i guess that wasn't enough....... perhaps i should of sacrificed a bit more shutter speed and dropped down to 1/320???

it'll be acouple of weeks before i get chance to have another go at that particular arena but i'll post them up when i do....

Steve...All things considered they are pretty good. We avoid indoor shoots (Sharon & I) as much as possible because of the lighting problems. #2 is excellent form, if only you had been to your right about 3 feet more. Rider and horse are in perfect form for a "classic style" shot.
Are you using RAW? If not, try it as you can shift the color temp in a blink.
For those that do not shoot horses, Jumping shows are really tough as you only get 1 split second when all is right. there are about 3 "classic positions" as they launch and land, indoors you have time to pick only one because of flash recharge lag.

I agree with Jon's comments. Also, I think it would have been better if you'd gotten the horse's hind hooves in frame in the indoor photos. Very cool, though, to see the dirt flying from the front hooves in photo #2.

Steve ,

Positions are good but the lighting was not in your favour . I shoot quite a lot of horse events have a look if you like at the portfolio (external link) . Form experience unless I am forced to I will normally leave the indoor stuff because the owners , unless they are desperate and you are lucky wont buy .

Roy, thanks for the link to your portfolio... thoroughly enjoyed looking through your photo's, some fantastic shots in there! if i can get some shots half as nice i'll be doing ok! Unfortunately most of the shows i attend are indoor events, which means high iso and tons of noise for me! however i do hope to do some outdoor shots of the mounted games through the summer too, hopefully i'll get some good stuff then!

Thanks everybody for the comments, i shall be trying again tommorow, although at a different location - again it's indoors, but it has much better lighting......

Jon, thanks for the tips..... yes i am shooting RAW, however this is one of my big weaknesses - i'm not too hot at the post processing! I'm still fairly new to all this and post PP'n is one thing i seriously need to get a grip of..... i'll give it another go on the 2 indoor shots and see what i can do....

as said, i'm still pretty new to all this so the tips and comments are very much appreciated.... keep em coming!
