Testing for front or back focusing?

I hear talk of people having problems with lenses front or back focusing. Is there a test one can do to determine if this is happening? And if so, which one is occuring? I'm assuming this problem is minor and just causes the pics to be soft, not a huge, obvious, focusing 3ft in front of the target type problem.

Just trying to figure out what people are refering to and how to test a potential new lens. Thanks for any help:)
