I am trying out a 400mm 5.6 lens that I rented. Today is the 1st day and so far I am liking it. This was handheld with a 1.4x extender mounted to the lens. I sure do need lots of practice catching moving targets with this combination. But when I got my act together the lens did its part.

He came out very well. Is that ice on the river in the background?

Good Job. You will like the 400mm for flight captures. Which TC since the canon will not auto focus?:(

Thanks mitch. It is ice but on Smithville lake just North of Kansas City Missouri.

Thank you rathke. It does AF with the 1.4x on a 1DmkII. :) I was pleased at how well it worked too. I used Al Servo and as long as I could hold it on the bird it tracked just fine. It was my tracking skills that need some work.

Dale, when I decided to get inflight shots, I started to practice bringing the camera up to the eye, getting my finger on the trigger and finding the bird in the view finder. I practiced on planes, cars, pigeons, anything that moved. Ya know, it worked. I have no trouble now, tracking the larger birds and do pretty good at it.

Still have trouble with the little guys though, but then, I can't even track them with my eyes, let alone the camera. :D

Ah - the ever increasing wishlist.

Keep posting the shots - I wish there was a lens rental place nearby for me in UK.
I keep putting off buying one hoping canon will add a "voucher" for 2007 or bring out an updated 400L, but the more posts I see I feel like just buying one now:lol:   .
