I am wondering what do you use to store all of the pictures you take. The hard drive on the computer, a server/NAS, an external hard drive, etc... How large is it speaking in Gigabytes. How many of the do you have and where did you get them.

I usually dont keep them all saved. I will delete the OOF ones, overexposed ones, etc etc. Underexposed I will keep depending on the degree of underexposure. Then I copy them to a CD. And some Ill save to a 1gb flash drive.

Save mine to two external hard drives and copy to dvd's or cd's. I keep each hard drive in a different place.

If I'm on a trip, I first transfer them to my work laptop. When I get home, I transfer them to an external hard drive. I also have a Netgear SC-101 which I have set-up in RAID 1 (redundancy) which I use for important folders that I really don't want to lose. After I fill up one external hard drive, I buy a new bigger one (which by then is about the same price as the smaller one) and transfer all the old files to the new hard drive (which usually fills up about half of the new drive)...repeat.

Just lately, I've been buring some important pictures to DVD, but that is so time consuming, I'm not sure I'll continue to do so.

One thing I don't do which I should do is keep redundant drives in different locations.

I burn images to two dvd's. Ones that haven't been backup remain on RAID 1 partition. I would mind a external HD too!

Main access on internal harddrive. However ALL photos are archived to two external USB2.0 harddrives which are never powered up unless reading/writing to them.

In spite of claims about permanence, remember all CD-R and -RW and DVD-R and -RW are inherently designed with organic dyes, and the same issues that erode the quality of color negs and prints and slide, which are also based on organic dyes, can attack these digital media, too. There is one CD dye family which is better than the other two CD dye families. And since DVD are burned at higher rates than CD, their dyes are inherently less stable than the CD dyes. In terms of proven permanence, only magnetic media is truly proven....CD and DVD are only claims based upon artificial accelerated testing. And there are documented examples of unrecoverable data on CD/DVD!

I'm with Wilt on this one. 320 gb Seagate external usb drive (£80!) only powered up on transfers, stored away from the computer. 80gb on the desktop. Never needed a cd/dvd yet...

Those I keep are on my PS CS2 machine hard drive on a partition. This is backed up daily automatically via Handy Backup to an external. I dump most shots tho' as they don't have what I want. I don't do anything else. Can't be bothered.

The hard drive on my pc, plus backup to an external hard drive. I'll also periodically burn 2 dvd's, one remains with me, the other goes to another location in case of fire or theft.

2 external USB drives 250GB, one is "Master" and one is "Backup". I manually mirror the "Master" to the "Backup" after a session using SyncBackSE. I also mirror the "Master" to a second external USB drive 60GB which is physically smaller and is always in my - non photo - backpack that I carry with me every workday. I don't use CD:s or DVD:s since I don't trust them in the long run.
