I see alot of you are using RAID 1 what do you feel about 4 Seagate SATA 250GB in RAID 5

That's what I'm running right now and it's safer then 1, with better performance.

I burn everything to two DVDs and keep only the current stuff on my laptop.

RAID 5 isn't necessarily better than RAID 1, considering if you lose any 1 drive, you have to go through a rebuild process which can seriously degrade data. At the least, you have some major downtime while the array is in a rebuild process, which is much more difficult than a RAID1. RAID 5 requires a minimum of 3 drives, while RAID 1 can be done with only 2.

Raid 3, and 0+1 are the more commonly recommended arrays for digital imaging and video processing.

If you're going to use 4 identical drives, use a 0+1 Array. It's a striped set on one pair, mirrored to the second pair.

250g hard drive on main PC with nothing else on it. Burn to CD and the DVD. When away from home, store on laptop, then transfer to main PC when return home.

RAID 1+0, and 0+1 are backwards from each other.
