Very cool. I'm having a lot of fun learning and playin with the 50d. Where do you guys usually shoot in the area?

In the immediate area I look out for things like car shows and festivals. Downtown Buford is somewhat interesting. Lake Lanier has some decent spots around the lake. A little further away, I really love Roswell. They have a great historic district, some old mill ruins on Vickery Creek, a nice nature center, and trails. Then you have lots of great waterfalls and scenic spots to the north - many only an hour away or so.

Sugar Hill has a festival and car show coming up on 10/23. Buford has two on the schedule for 11/6.

Awesome thanks for the great info! I've been meaning to get down to Suwanee Town Center Park and walk around.

FYI on airshows - there is one in Peachtree City this coming weekend - not a big show but good for panning practice. Usually some military jets and a lot of props.
Shoot jets on shutter priority at 1/300 or faster (slower if you can pan well and want good low pass background blur)
Shoot all props at 1/250 or slower so you don't freeze the props. Some movement on the props is required. While the best pros shoot props at 1/80 to get a full disc - again shutter priority. ISO 100 and (•) metering. Center focus point with ring of fire enabled. Tracking medium. AI Servo on.

That should cover it. If helicopters show up you have to slow down to 1/20 to get the prop blur - good luck with that.
Everything hinges on what lens you're shooting with - it gets tougher the longer you have. I've been shooting the 500 with a 1.4 on it for quite a while - you get used to it.
The 100-400 is the most common lens i see at all the airshows Its a great lens - just don't try putting a 1.4 on it as its makes it too slow.
A 300 is just about right for everything except dead show center.

Dobbins is a pain in the butt - last year i had a crew pass and a good friend/pilot with his AF KC 135 on static and it still took me 4 hours to get out after the show was over. Good luck with that. I'll be there all three days though - practice for Alliance in Ft. Worth over Halloween.

I'll start shooting weddings when they start holding them on Wednesdays!

Center focus point with ring of fire enabled.

Ring of fire? Is that the AF point expansion option?

Yes exactly - the inner 9 points and not the whole AF grid. (or whatever your expansion setting on the camera you shoot has built in)
