I'm thinking about buying some used equipment from B&H. Is this a good idea? Are there better ideas?

I've bought used gear from BH, Adorama, and Lensrentals (external link) as well as Craig's List. If you're careful you can get some great deals. KEH can also have some good buys too. Just look around and compare.

If you ever need another place to rent from, check out Lensrentals (external link). I've used them bunches of times before Aperturerent came around. They have a great selection and their service is top notch. I really like that place and those folks. :-)

Edit: Just checked & Lensrentals has a 17-55 for sale for $711 (external link)

Well, the 17-55mm is on it's way! :) Ended up getting it at KEH.com (thanks Travis) due to them having a warranty on sold used equipment. Lensrentals.com does not warranty anything under $1000 :( Can't wait to use it! Thanks for the info guys.

Your choice would have been great if it wasn't for the warranty issue. But thanks for the info. Might have to use them in the future for renting lenses if Aperturent doesn't have something!

Thanks guys! Man, I can't wait to shoot with it as well. I will probably take off early one day next week to try and get some shots. I might be riding in a mtn bike competition next week so that's a shooting opportunity as well!

Interesting - what competition? I'm looking to get into biking and might be fun to combine photography with it.

Well this is what you are looking for! We had a team in 2011 that competed in the Just For Fun category. The cool thing was that we actually won the championship :D But only because we were the only team that showed up at all 6 tracks throughout the year. We aren't professional nor fast (compared to the real mtn bikers) but its usually some great people out there and all ages, skills, and weights ride together! You are always welcome to just go to the competitions and watch, just be sure to stay out of the serious bikers way

Here's us in 2011:

I just got a full suspension Trek last year before my surgery so I have not had a chance to get out much. I had to give up motocross because of too many injures so I am slowing down a bit and going biking. We should totally get a group together to go biking one day! Lots of great places around mine and timEasters area!

I hope you recovered well! I'm definitely down to start riding, especially when the time changes back! What area do you live in?

Oh man, I would love to go biking.

No time though. My 5 year old keeps me pretty busy.

Congrats on the new lens! I am jealous.

Cool! I think I rode once in that area but can't recall. I don't mind travelling during the weekend though.

And I have a 3 YO boy.. It was so hard to leave the family at home while I go ride my dirt bike, but now I set the wife up with a mt bike as well as a trailer for lil man. They can use the path and I go off on the trails.

That looks fun! I just cleaned up my 20-year old Rockhopper because my wife wants to start riding but she's not into the off road trail stuff. I only rode my bike 2-3 times back when I bought it so it was in great shape after all this time. I put on some cheap road tires so I can get out and build up my legs a bit and make sure nothing breaks (on the bike, not me). Maybe later this year I'll upgrade to something more modern when I have the cash. Here's my bike:
