jbear and I are out of town at a conference. But you guys should get out and shoot something this weekend
I am always shooting RAW+Medium jpg. For the simple reason CF card space is plentiful and HD space is nearly free. RAW gives you more latitude to "save" an image if you have to- and creatively "modify" an image if you want to.
Remember that jpgs from your camera are "completed" images generated by the assumptions made by your cameras design engineers about what the "public" likes in a photo. "Picture Styles" in your 40d allow you to quickly change those assumptions and changes how your photo will look as a jpg.
In short taking pictures in RAW allows you to make different choices in sharpening / white balance/ saturation/ etc. then the camera defaults.
I'm writing this while taking notes during a seminar, so I hope it all made sense

Made perfect sense, and I for one greatly appreciate this information. I was talking to a guy at wolf camera yesterday about this exact same topic. I had shot RAW once, but since I didnt fully understand its full capabilities, I went back to JPG format. But after what has been said here and speaking with the wolf camera guy, I can't image that I will ever shoot JPG again.
Thanks tons, now get back to work!
