Anyone want to talk about the WB settings they use?
Whether you have used WB Correction or WB Bracketing?

Currently I am studying more in depth about WB and about being more pro-active when it comes to these camera settings. Up until now I have used Auto WB, which I know is a HUGE no no. I have however begun changing my WB to the presets (daylight, shade, cloudy, tungsten, florescent, and flash). I however haven't even touched yet on Custom and/or color tempature.

I just thought maybe since the discussion on Levels seem to be so popular and helpful (at least to me) that maybe I would open the floor up for WB discussions. =D Anyone?

Oh and one more question for anyone who uses AEB. How many stops do you set yours for? I was thinking it should only be set to adjust 1/3-stop for each, is this correct?

I always have trouble even when using presets. Haven't researched how to do the custom setting...

DigitalDawn:
I use AWB when I am out shooting in uncontrolled conditions, or shooting snapshots.

Indoors at sports events, or other events where the lighting source is fixed and constant I preset my WB with a Gray Card using Custom WB.

If I am outdoors in one static location and shooting a series using AEB for an HDR shot I will use whatever pre-set WB setting is appropriate, i.e., Sunshine, cloudy, etc.

I haven't had the experience of using the WB bracketing, or in camera WB shift. Perhaps that would come in handy for evaluating different artistic effects, but the same can be done in CS3 in Camera Raw with just a click of the mouse.

Setting the Custom WB with a Gray Card has made a tremendous difference in the quality of my shots for indoor sports.

Just checking in...

to answer the question and correct what I said. I shot the grip and grin in raw and only the grainy shots are at 6400. I knew there was no way to get good shots at lower ISO speeds since it was almost totally dark in the hall. So I just went with it and knewit would be grainy. I turned them B/W or Sepia-like as it suited my eye. You should always use the lowest ISO you possibly can - unless you are using a high ISO for effect. (Which I was!)

I sometimes use an "Expodisc" for custom WB - it was especially helpful in the dome shooting the Falcons games. Most of the time though I'm too lazy to use it for other shooting and just go with the camera presets. The engineers are a lot smarter than I am and if we learn to use our cameras for all they are worth - you will get unreal results. That doesn't mean go out and just click away on program mode though! In the dome or in a Gym - there is often really odd lighting and even odder color shifts. Use an expodisc and all that virtually goes away

Today we toured or shot at Lockheed Martin - of the new F 35 LIGHTNING next to the WWII warbird Glacier Girl P-38 Lightning,(the one they dug out of the tons of ice a few years ago) then went to Vought Aircraft and looked in on a rebuild shop where they are rebuilding a "Flying Pancake" and a few other old very cool aircraft. Then we went over to Bell Helicopter and looked at and shot their BA609 Tiltrotor aircraft and waited around for the flyby and landings of a P-51 Mustang and a cool little one passenger Navy jet that I don't recall the model.
We're beat!

So far the one best takeaway of the conference is to get it right in the camera so you don't have to do much if anything in Photoshop. The second good thing to remember is to edit your pictures in Digital Photo Pro - especially if you are shooting with a 40D or a pro body.

I'll start shooting weddings when they start holding them on Wednesdays!

Hello Gang! *waves*

Like I had said, weather anyone joined me or not, I was going to without a doubt get out and take advantage of this absolutely beautiful weather.
After shooting for two days straight, here are by far my 2 absolute favorite photographs from the Zoo.
No over or under exposed photos! YAY!

The zoo was actually very challenging with so many areas that are in the harsh sun light and areas in the shadows. But even when faced with this challenge, I believe I managed to adapt well seeing how I walked away with some absolutely amazing photos. I am so proud of myself, these photos required no real digital darkroom work at all.

Probably those biggest challange is photography the gorillas seeing how they have such a heavy brow line, and thier eyes themselves are so dark. I did however manage to get some great photos of them though. I also got a few amazing photos of the lions.

I did shoot in RAW both days. I also utilized my AEB, but didnt set it properly, so I was unable to utilize it with my Zoo shots doing HDR. I played tons with my Metering Mode, which was very helpful in many cases seeing how the light was extremely harsh. I however for the most of the day stuck with a preset WB of Daylight. jbear you will be happy to know that I am now setting my ISO higher to see the effects, and of course to try a utilize it when most useful.

Okay I lied, you all should have know by now that there was no way that I could only post 2 photos. I an a photograph addict.

Comments and Critiques of course are always welcomed. This week I will be playing with filters, and try a few things with Custom WB. I am heading to a waterfall, the lake, and just down right seeking out highly reflective situations. Oh and I am reading tonight, and have read about the Grey Card, will look further into this and a filter which helps set up good custom WB.

Still having way to much fun!

I'm waiting a bit for better weather to hit the zoo up. I've only been there once but I enjoyed it. Nice shots there. Oh hey cool, I'm also in NE Georgia. Howdy neighbor!

Just got this from a friend at ISAP - this is his sharpening method:

Open in Camera Raw - even if you shoot jpeg.

adjust your exposure and tinting as in the 7 step Scott Kelby method

when you get down to "Clarity" - set it to 70
then go to the sharpening button and set it to Amount:75/Radius:1.0/Detail:55/ Masking :95
Then open the image - make whatever corrections you are going to do there and the last thing you do before you save is change to LAB color, select the lightness channel, go to unsharp mask and set it to 150% /.5 pixels / 3 levels threshold.
click ok and you're done

wars have been fought over sharpening techniques - don't shoot me - i'm just the messenger

and it works ok for me!

you know - it seems a rather unnecessary re-inventing of the wheel to put up another forum "just for locals"
plus using this board to advertise it is rather disingenuous to boot.

At the top of this page it says "Atlanta, Georgia POTN'ers"

That is enough for me to feel like there is a home for Gerogia shooters. If all you Rebel shooters want a board of your own - go for it.

But know that disrespecting the good folks who provided this platform to promote your own - is both unnecessary and rude to Canon POTN. Plus its more than silly.

I agree, but some of us can't log in and check it every few hours - by the time I come around to check it, its full of posts - some that dont have anything to do with the Atlanta Area. I'd view the other board as a sub-forum of POTN that lets locals meet each other and talk about meetups- not everybody likes to shoot landscapes together. I like urban exploration - I'd like to find others in the Atlanta area that are into it as well.

Oh, and camera type shouldn't have anything to do with it. I know what you meant, but I had to point it out. lol. ;)
