Oh, and also, the fact that this forum is mostly Canon shooters may scare some users of other brands away. I'd like a place for people in the Atlanta area who enjoy photography - canon or not, digital or not, to go and congregate.

To me, photography is a fun thing that is shared with people, why limit ourselves to the POTN board?

To me, photography is a fun thing that is shared with people, why limit ourselves to the POTN board?

1) because it is already here
2) because there are already enough forums available to choose from
3) because it has never been limited to only Canon shooters
4) because it is a replication of effort and twice as many forums to keep up with
5) because all you have to do is create a bookmark to this particular thread to limit your POTN experience to just Atlanta shooters.

and one to throw in - The fredmiranda forum for the local atlanta shooters is the second busiest forum on FM. It does everything POTN does and then some and its open to everyone in Atlanta no matter what they shoot with.

There isn't a need for another forum for Atlanta shooters.

and its wrong to use POTN to promote it even if there was a need for it.

with all due respect jBear, nobody is forcing you to join.

i just think a seperate forum would be much easier to gather people / sell things / meet locals.

trying to find something in this thread is nearly impossible.

jBear - I have nothing against POTN or FM - but those forums you talk about are just threads. You have to weed through them to find what you want to talk about.

The fact that the title of the forum in the Upper Left hand corner of POTN says:
CANON DIGITAL photography forums tends to drive people away.
Would you post about your S2000 in a diesel truck forum?

Yes, I am young and impatient and like to have access to things right away. I don't like having to weed through 100 posts trying to find a discussion of where the next meetup is going to be.

If there are local forums (not threads, but whole forums, with sub-forums, threads, etc) for local car, bike, music, etc people, then why would a forum for local photographers be such a bad thing?

I respect your opinion, but this is something I've been wanting for a long time.

I agree that it's not the best idea to promote it on POTN - but this thread is the only place that it has been - less than three (i didn't go back and count so if its more, forgive me) posts make reference to the actual domain name of this new forum.

I see photographers in Atlanta everywhere, but we need a place to network and meet each other. That's how you get a strong community. 5 people going to the mountains to take pictures is fun, but what about seminars with 100s of local photographers taking part?

e r y k - pm me - If you need some help, I'm offering - I'd also take some moderator duties as well.

the logic boggles even the best of minds

1st you want a smaller place to meet so you can have larger groups

that doesn't make any sense

2nd you justify wasting bandwidth here by propping up something that doesn't exist

3rd you say you respect my opinion and you proceed to ignore its wisdom

4th I have yet to meet a Nikon shooter who is so cowardly that they are afraid to post here - they do it all the time.

5th you say you have to weed through simple threads - yet you want a forum with possibly hundreds of threads to weed through - when all you have to do is be current on this one to know what is going on.

I guess thats too hard - too much effort -

... and you wish to moderate a forum? Have you ever done that? I have - its a lot more work than you evidently know.

I agree with the points made. It would be nice though, if this thread had subdivided sections so its easier to backtrack and follow past conversations. There's a tremendous amount of good tips and information on this thread alone... But to go back and find something particular is nearly impossible.

When something gets so busy with different topics and conversations going on at the same time, is it not time to find an efficient and more organized solution? 'See a need, fill a need' that's all.

Hope not to offend anyone.

P.S. Lowbyte, I need to get that equipment to you. My cellphone is busted, so I need your number. email me please.

Jbear, you've given so many tips and advice on this thread. When I discovered this area on the forum, I read most of this thread (which was already huge at that time). Now, when I try to go back and find one of your tips, it's pretty much a waste of effort trudging through so many pages of posts non-related to what it is in particular I was trying to find.

I believe everyone's had that experience at some time or another.

1st you want a smaller place to meet so you can have larger groups

that doesn't make any sense

like mentioned before, its not solely made for meeting.

2nd you justify wasting bandwidth here by propping up something that doesn't exist

propping up what? i dont get your question.

3rd you say you respect my opinion and you proceed to ignore its wisdom

i respect your opinion, to an extent, but when you start bickering about such trivial matters it gets annoying. are you paying for the domain? no. are you paying for the hosting? no. are you spending your time getting it setup, no.

i dont see how such a small thing im doing on the side has lit you afire.

4th I have yet to meet a Nikon shooter who is so cowardly that they are afraid to post here - they do it all the time.

5th you say you have to weed through simple threads - yet you want a forum with possibly hundreds of threads to weed through - when all you have to do is be current on this one to know what is going on.

and what if you arent current with this thread? theres already 600+ posts in this thread. to be honest, i didnt even know this thread existed until i saw it on the main boards.

I guess thats too hard - too much effort -

... and you wish to moderate a forum? Have you ever done that? I have - its a lot more work than you evidently know.

yes i've moderated before on a large paintball forum with a 200K user base.

honestly jbear, i dont even know what you are complaining about.

you voiced your opinion, i voiced mine. yet you try to shut the idea down. what do you want me to do?

you know what, maybe youre right, the forum is pointless, and i guess over time it will tell. and at that point, i can say at least i tried. at the end of the day, i take the losses,

if you wish to further address this matter, feel free to PM me as I do not wish to clutter this thread any longer.

Hi boys and girls...how are things?
Anyone shooting anything exciting?
Jon

OF COURSE!

I went out today to the Dam and got in trouble for shooting towards the Dam, and hubby got in trouble for flying his RC Hellicopter there (restircted air space). Needless to say that park was closing soon so we moved to another park right down the road. And then they busted us for not paying to get into the other park (my annual pass ran out). But they were extremely nice about all of this. There is a family of ferral cats living at this park and I got a few shots of them, the kittens are getting big, and they are abosultely adorable.

I have as you may have seen also been to the zoo. I have also been a few other places here and there lately. But since its been raining I have also been doing Studio Still Life shots. And since its going to rain again this weekend, I will probably work in my DIY softbox some more. This has been great fun, challenging, and a great learning experience.

You all are just not seeing what all I am shooting anymore because I have begun posting them in other threads here at POTN.

P.S. I'm not going anywhere! You are all stuck with me!

He has an r/c! I've got to see it someday! I want to build an r/c photography helicopter as it will save so much money for my aerial imaging. I've got some friends at Southern Polytech that are building a huge gas powered r/c as an engineering project. It weighs over 80 lbs.

I've been enjoying your photography.

My hubby could sure help you with that, he is a nut for Hellicopters. He actually knows a lot about them, real ones and RC ones. On rainy days while I shoot stills in my lightbox he works on his DIY Hellicopter Simulator. For Christmas I purchased him some flight time around the Kind and Queen building whereas he got to actually do some of the flying. Was perfect for him.

I am glad that you have enjoyed my photos. I just felt after a few comments were made that maybe I should post them in threads designated specifically for comments and critiques. Yet none of these people who comment want to give suggestions, they just want to critique with thier opinions. Not real usefull for someone such as myself who is thriving hard to learn fast. Oh well!

I LOVE PHOTOGRAPHY!

The pilot I hire lets me occasionally take control of the chopper. It's such a rush! He's a former Captain and Army Aviator, so he's shown me some of the military maneuvers. One was to go top speed tossing and turning just above the treetops, staying around 30-40 feet above the leaves. I didn't know where I was, but the next thing I knew he dove down to ground level and raced up a riverbed. I nearly sh*t myself.

We also flew over the Appalachean Mountains while fighting powerful winds...and yes, I nearly sh*t myself then, too. The winds were so strong when we were approaching the peaks, at one point the helicopter was at full power and yet we were standing still and not gaining any ground. The winds had us twisting and turning 80 degrees in every direction.

All in all, if I can find a career in a helicopter and spend each day in the air...I would finally wake up every morning and absolutely love my job!

I read that outloud and hubby said "damn I know how he feels"!

We used Prestege Hellicopter of Atltnata. They are located at the Peachtree / Decalb Airport.
While hubby was off flying, I got a nice shot of Fox 5 coming in to fuel up.
I have never been in a chopper, and really I have very little desire to. :o

Oh, come now! :D Those were just the thrill rides. We fly in a Robinson R-44 and on a clear, calm day it's no more bumpy than riding in a cadillac. It's very smooth, safe, and addictive. Make sure to have the pilot take the door off if you plan to bring the camera!

The only reason to take the door off for me is so that I have a clear shot!
For throwing-up, not picture taking. :p

I get some serious virtigo. I love scary ass thrill rides, mountain hiking, and plane rides. I would love to some day to try parasailing, but I am afraid I would spend my entire time up there just feeding the fish. :p (gross)
