no

the jobo was some wife abilities IIRC but not for tethered shooting. The Canon's also won't be coming to N. America

Welcome to POTN.

No you can't shoot directly to these units. You need to shoot to the cf card and then transfer it via the card to the unit.

they need to come up with an external drive that uses a fake CF card to plug into the camera, which , now that I think about it should be fairly easy since I have a collection of pinouts for various computer hardware, including CF cards and harddrives.

I have one, but I think it's still be kinda neat to make a battery powered laptop drive that you could plug directly into the CF slot on the camera.

Whoa - back to the future!

Shooting to tethered hard drives is how some of the first commercially available digital SLR hardware was set up, like on the Kodak DCS100 system...and this was, what, 15 years ago?

http://www.mir.com.my …companies/Kodak/index.htm (external link)

There's some wisdom to this approach for high-volume shooters, for sure. After having handled a DCS100 and heard its price tag for 1.3 megapixels, perhaps its no wonder I stuck to film for ten more years...

Cabling is SO 20th Century, though. ;) How about someone invent a camera grip with a special high-capacity battery and a built-in hard drive? Or built a tethered system using WiFi/800.11n instead of a cable, so the HD can clip onto a strap, bag or belt?

Ah, the good ol' kodak photo CD from a camera. 15 years ago I didn't know what an SLR was.. I was 10. A grip with a highcap battery and hard drive shouldn't be a problem. A CF-Wireless card would be really interesting. I'll have to write up a design proposal to some friends who work in computer engineering.

I was talking with the Wolverine folks on the phone Friday (26 Jan 2007) and was told they have been looking at downloading from camera to device via the USB ports on the camera, but so far have not been able to get it to work correctly apparently. But it is a feature they plan to add in the future. It does work with video input from some P&S cameras though, just not still cameras yet.

And for related trivia: they will no longer be issueing firmware updates for the FlashPro, but will continue for the FlashPac, MVP and ESP lines. Apparently the FlashPro did not do very well, although I happen to like mine. I found this out in asking about firmware for using SDHC cards. Not happening with FlashPro apparently.

thanks for the interesting responses.
i think its not that big a leap - and far more practical than dragging a laptop which is worth allot more money than canon m80 or epson p-5000 for example and 5 times bigger.
the only problem i guess it sort of removes the back up storage to a certain degree.
but the pros and uses out way the cons i feel.

These is one already..... it's called a microdrive!

But surely, if you are going to shoot direct to a "harddrive" that you can then plug into a laptop, surely, thats exactly what you are doing with a CF card/reader?

Microdrives don't hold enough for me, and I've noticed that not all card readers will handle them correctly, even if they are "microdrive compliant" The cost of a microdrive is also a little cost prohibitive, considering I can get an 80GB Laptop drive for about $75.

I have had days where I filled my pair of 2GB CF cards using my XT already from shooting highschool wrestling matches.

Wi-Pics looks PERFECT! *URK* just found the price..I think it's time to buy more CF cards
