I inverted it, unsharp mask, levels, duplicate layer applied gaussian blur to that layer and then erased the blur layer off of the area of smoke that is in focus.

I used the onboard flash ( saving for a flash and 400mm lens) I did use a -1 flash compensation.
lens 100mm 2.8 macro

I had my first go at smoke the other night too. ;) Just a prelim shoot to get a feel for the technique. Fun stuff!
