IR filter question :D

im wondering if an IR filter will work ok on an Xti? i was talking to my friend and he said Dslrs had problems with IR?

It will, but most DSLRs have a strong anti-IR filter over the sensor, so you'll need very long exposure times (and a tripod); there are also a number of lenses which will produce "hot spots" in the center of the image in IR photography.

I haven't had any problems with using a Hoya R72 IR filter on my 10D and 5D. However like Jon said it takes long exposures (tripod needed), and some lenses do have a hot spot. Click here for a list of lenses that have a good and bad reputation. However they list the Canon EF 28-105 f/3.5-4.5 as a bad lens and I have found the exact opposite. So yes you should be able to take IR photos with your Xti (I haven't heard anyone saying no), and your friend is not accurate at least in the 4 Canon DSLR's I have seen take IR photos. Then there are more options like having your cameras built in IR filter removed, this will give you much faster shutter speeds but for me its just not worth it
