That's actually a great environmental portrait of a small child, and tells a bit of a story too. I really like it, and i like the contrast of the innocent fresh face with the father's hands.

just a couple of questions - did you use flash to get the catchlights in the eyes, and also did you ask permission before taking the shot? This is the sort of picture/ street candid stuff I would love to get good at, but with the current climate in the UK taking candids of kids in public is unhealthy to say the least.

Thanks for the kind words.

Did NOT use flash. Shutter was 1/50, aperture F3.5, ISO 1600, lens Tam 28-75mm zoom at 75 mm.

I'm just beginning to get into candid/street photography, but I've taken a page from Travis Ruse' playbook (http://www.travisruse.com/) (external link), which I've found to be very valuable.

I caught the father's eye, raised my camera off my chest a couple of inches, looked at his son and mouthed the words, "may I." He nodded affirmatively and I snapped the pic.

Is a nod from his father enough to give us permission to put this photo online?
I am becoming nervous when it comes to "permission" to publish online of people.

AFAIK you need a model release if the picture is going to be used for commercial purposes. Otherwise it's a non-issue.
