Canon announced earlier that they will be introducing 20 cameras this year..............so there are more models on the way... .:-)

My prediction:

10D upgrade - 8 mpx, DIGIC II, higher FPS.
300D upgrade - 6 pmx, black body (OOPsss, thats already in Japan).
1Ds upgrade - 14 mpx, DIGIC II, higher retail price.

EF Lenses:
100-300 f4 L IS
200 f1.8 L IS
and
12-30 f4 L

Okay, all my predictions are "L" lenses!!! he he!!!

Oh, and lets not forget the s600 - 6 mpx elph!!!

I'm not real sure how they would improve on it? Maybe add wireless capability like the new Nikon? It's an astounding camera as it is.

Probably the 1Ds MkII will have the pixel density of the 1D MkII or even the 10D, and the same ultrafast Digic II processor and reduced noise at high ISO speeds, and probably the same ISO range than the 10D/1D MkII (ISO 1600 at least). The increase pixel density will increase resolution to 14-16MP too. Also it will include the new 1D MkII niceties as automatic orientation of pictures, 10x preview zoom, etc. This is the only I can think as "improvements", to equal the 1Ds to the 1D MkII in features, besides the wireless option already mentioned (and promised by Canon for later this year as an option) .

I also don't think the 1Ds Mk II will be a 2004 camera, more probably a early 2005 one.

Just my 2 cents

Yes, I agree - the 1Ds II should simply have a larger version of the 1D II's sensor, so that they could be manufactured by the same process. It will have all the newer features that are common on 10D's and the new 1D, and will sport a lower noise level and higher ISO comparable to the 1D II as well.

My humble opinion is that the camera manufacturers that generally manufacture 35mm DSLR equivalents AKA Canon, Nikon, Fuji need to really break the 35mm barrier and surpass 35mm film and more so slide quality, were almost there but just not quite. There are now medium format digi-backs pushing out anything between 20-30 Mpixels at stupendous £s/$s. It appears to me that most manufacturers are content with simply just getting as close to their film cousins as best possible and not too bothered about breaking these boudries. We have been with 35mm now for around 30 years, then the next jump is medium format.

My speculation is that we could end up with a 3 CCD or 3 CMOS model that is the ultimate Hybrid between 35mm and medium format, taking the developments in their video camcorder technology, having separate sensors for R,G and B giving resolutions in the region of 15-20 Meg without interpolation ?

I give you the new Canon 3D's - 20 MPixel £10,000 (only £500 per Mpixel)

I can now see you all drooling, preparing to remortgage the house, send the wife back to work, tell the kids they'll have to settle working at Burger King or some other fast food joint and forego a University education so that you can purchase that ultimate piece of electronic engineering and be one up on everyone else.

Cautionary note - ENJOY PHOTOGPRAPHY, it's more than having the best kit available - As my wife keeps telling me it's not what you have...... it's how you use it. I have far more decent photos taken with my old and since deceased AE1 Programme, A1 and F1 than I currently have with my 10D. Look at Bailey and Litchfield as an example and what they can do with an Olympus Trip

Don't get caught up in the techno trap, Photogrpahy is so much more than that

1Ds MKII will probably be announced in autumn 2004.

14Mp
5Fps with increased buffer
Digic II
Improved AF
Other handy features
£7000 (ish)

That is what I believe.
That is what I will not be able to afford, and don't need
That is what I will keep saying to myself.

If in doubt, I shut up...

Gear: 40D, 12-24mm AT-X Pro, 17-85mm, Sigma 150mm Macro Sigma 100-300 F4, 550EX, other stuff that probably helps me on my way.

Word. I must say, though, that using the 1Ds makes it difficult to go back to cropped-frame dSLRs. Still, some of my best stuff was shot with a broken Pentax K1000 or a 60-year-old 4x5 view camera.

 But seeing as how this IS the speculation thread, I'm really hoping for the 1Ds Mk II to have a somewhat higher frame rate (4-5 FPS) and lower noise. Yes, the noise isn't exactly super high, but the higher ISOs are pretty noisy and higher sensitivity would be nice. Reduced abberations at the frame edge would be nice, though part of that is the lens and part due to the microlenses and 3D structure of the CMOS sensor.

Oh yeah, and more resolution is always welcome as long as noise doesn't go up with it. I've found that the resolution on the 1Ds is sufficient for most uses.
