I was just wondering what the best set of rechargeble batteries are? Mainly used for the 580EX. I have a set of 2500mah Energizer batteries, that work good, but the only problem I have with them is that the charger takes close to 8+ hours to fully charge the batteries. I know there's quick chargers out there that will charge batteries in as little as 15-90 minutes, but can I use my Energizer batteries in them, or is it specifically designed for only the batteries that come with the charger. If not, could anyone suggest a good set of batteries/charger that would charge relatively quickly. Thanks.

You need to get a LaCross BC-900 charger. You wont be fretting about what kind of batteries to buy etc. If your charger takes 8 hrs there must me something wrong. The BC-900 charges slowly at 200mA (which is recommend than shocking your poor batteries with 1200 mA just coz you want them charged quickly) and it only takes less than 4 hours.

The BC-900 come with a set of 4 AA and 4 AAA, the AA are my primary batteries for my 550EX and I have another 1800mAh refreshed set of Energiser that work equally well on the 550EX. More than enough for a days worth of flash photography for me.

I wonder how long I have to hang out on POTN before I get as good as Ansel Adams ?

8 hr. isn't an indication somnething's wrong; many of the less expensive or older chargers are designed to produce a very low charging current to keep the heat down. I have a number of chargers, from Radio Shack (small folder doing 4 AAs at a time and taking no space) to a Lenmar (big, bulky, dual voltage and relatively quick; includes cooling fan) for my assorted battery types. Some Rayovac, some Kodak, some Energizer, . . .

While rapid chargers do shorten battery life, you will surely get you money's worth before they're shot.

The biggest disadvantage I have found about the rapid chargers is that they have transformer on the plugs. Just makes them bulkier and harder to pack along. I would go with the highest mAH you can find. 2500 mAH are pretty common these days.

One hour charger I got (external link) ($27.99) w/4x 2500mAH

Check you city for a BatteriesPlus store

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll check out the Energizer 15 minute charger. That looks like it might work.

i think 8 hrs is about right, someone posted here, or i read somewhere that someone posted here,

take the battery capacity and divide it by the charging capacity of the charger and multiply it by like 1.2 (for 120%) and that's roughly how long the charger will take to charger the battery

i have the energizer 2500ma too and the compact charger, i just leave them to charge overnight b4 i hit the bed and it's full when i wake up, there's an auto shut off if i'm not wrong.

Read the info on this site. Fast charging nickle based batteries is actually better for them than overnight slow charging. Recharageables are getting prety high tech and all the old NICAD rules dont apply anymore, no more discharging, or slow charging is best BS.

Above is a link to an older discussion. You are free to entertain any opinions that fits your fancy. I prefer to use my BC-900 and slow charge with regular refresh.
