This is a stunning street capture. The GRIT!!! There is a texture on the walls, even in the sunlight that reinforces the other-worldly fashion of the person who him/herself is in another cellualr world. In particular the spot of yellow and its balancing spot of red help pull the me toward the figure who arises just enough out of the shadows to come into the light, yet the person remains mysteriously bundled and sun-glassed against any revelation. This could be a city in any "civilized" area of anyplace. Civilization's veneer appears to be crumbling and flaking, eh?

Thanks for sharing... This is way powerful...

Thank you for the wonderful comment.

I do think metaphorically, and I try to communicate that through my images. Discovering that my voice was heard (through the image) is thrilling for me.

You made my day -- thanks Byrne.

(I have another street-pic that makes a strong communication, but my G5 is in repair right now - and I can't edit it. I will post it as soon as I can... I think you will like it)

I really like the shot, but I find it would be better by cropping out the blue and white sign. The colours, graffiti tags, and the person moving by all create a fantastic composition.

But wait... what is the English translation of that sign? Hulp!

Understood. But,

The translation is "The Furnace of Fuencarral".

Fuencarral (a region of Madrid) is a magnet for young people and has a grungy feel about it. The street is peppered with hip shops and boutiques with the Fuencarral Mercado as the focal point.

"The Furnace" is just too cool to crop out.

As always, thanks for the feedback

...at the same time, I'm not completely happy with the sign visually. I might take a shot at posting it... The crisp letters bother me. And, it's distracting. But I love the words. I want the words -- but not the sign. Hmm.

Of course you could add a soft glow to the sign... but you are so correct. This is indeed the melting down which a furnace causes. You've caught metaphoric sign, at a metaphoric moment. It is so real... so honest... so authentic. Pity that we have to wrestle with the liguistic ambiguity... but we own that problem, don't we? Does the artist have an obligation to sub-title art?

Hey that's a good question... anybody want to answer it?

well, it's a good question

As it happens, "The Furnace of Fuencarral" makes an awesome title for the shot -- so, I'm going to use that.

So, that just worked out well in this case.

In the general case, I would say 'no' to sub-title. When art becomes to literal, it becomes something other than art -- more like a 'record of something that happened'. Great art (and I'm not claiming that) has multiple metaphorical levels, and the meaning / interpretation is revealed through study.

Byrne: I'd like your take on this one
https://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=269706

It is tempting, but I'm not going to say anything about it. I'd just like to hear your comments. Thx.

I think the story is a less distracting one... Somewhere in here. If you can open up the face of the passer-by even more in your original, it seems to lend itself to a surreal square....
Perhaps in this area?

There is always a temptation to leave every interesting detail, even when they create more noise than information. And you have a superb eye for information. The first rule of writers is: Limit your topic.
It applies as well to visual artists. Unlike a pianist, we can not play simultaneous melodies as easily.

Ok, my G5 is back, and I was able to edit the pic I wanted to show you.

It's on this thread:

I totally understand. That was the intention behind blurring/burning the other people. I wanted to direct the eye to the bed (obviously), but I wanted to include this odd communication of people ignoring him. Seeing the others walk around him seemed to work. But, again, I get the C&C.

If what I wanted to say came always come across flawlessly, this wouldn't be a very fun quest :)

Thanks.

ps - I also seem have a strange aversion to squares. I think every photo I have is strongly horizontal or vertical.
I never noticed until now.
Odd.
