Just a few from this weekend. Our Bantam team hosted teams from Billings, MT and Bozeman, MT. A lot of sun. I didn't do any PP other than convert them to jpg using DPP. These aren't the best, just a few that caught my eye. Cropping and dodging some shadows will help but I'll wait until a parent asks. The games are posted here: http://dlpasco.smugmug.com/Sports/264630 (external link)

Comments and criticism always welcome. Thanks for looking.

Number 10 is one big dude! Is he fast too? Lots of times, the big guys aren't that fast. The little guys just rail around them, but the intimidation factor works well too!

The idea of an outdoor rink seems really good to me for the lighting alone, but the shadows shown here represent a whole other set of photographic challenges. Not to mention when the light starts to fade. I’ll bet it’s sweet at high noon though! What mode do you normally shoot in?

Nice captures!

Thanks. Yeah - #10 is big but he's a poor skater, thankfully ;) He wasn't much of a factor but the kids stayed out of his way along the boards.

I shoot in AV mode and in this bright light I didn't use any EC. I started at 8:30 at f/2.8 and slowly moved up to 5.6 at the 11:30 game (the Pee Wee game on smugmug). I've PP'ed a few of the better shots and worked on the shadows a little. With some work they will be okay. By the 3:30PM game I moved to the other side of the rink and had some long shadows by the third period.

Dan.

Where are you that they are still playing outdoors - I love it!!! I played outdoors as a kid and it was freezing...but its where the game was born...

I love the shots with the long shadows it really adds to the outdoor feel...

Cheers,

I'm with Symes - the long shadows are cool in shot #2. Good action in #5.

Thanks. I'm in Sheridan, WY. Some parents were commenting that it was 'hockey weather' - in the teens. Some of the players were wearing sunglasses under their mask and the home team usually gets the 'sun' advantage for the goalie ;)
