A lot of the images in this thread could be shot on a P&S.

I understand all the new people want to post their images and contribute, but it does not make a good argument or case for "convincing" people to give DSLR's a try.
There has been some select images that are quite compelling though.

My thoughts exactly.

I usually don't double post but, here is a recent example of a shot that would take a lot of effort to shoot with a P&S. Backlit, precise focus, perfect timing (a bit of luck there), looks better than this at more than 1024pix wide, etc...

Pretty sure a P&S would whiff in both cases:

Nice shots Jay...
And here's another which I doubt a P&S could capture.

Apparently, the fly is blowing/sucking in a bubble of air to help with digestion.

Well, I've seen some great P&S macro shots, but the issues here are:
Light - I had to use an extension to the flash to angle the light to the subject.
Mag. ratio - about 3:1 here I think. People with an MP-E 65 can go further.
Focus - some P&S don't have a viewfinder, so if sunlight were shining on your LCD, you couldn't even see the subject, let alone photograph it.

Back to you guys to post more pics which couldn't be taken with a P&S.

Nice, but it doesn't really scream DSLR. I would imagine a shot from a compact on a portable tripod at ISO 100-200 would look just as good.

Yes I agree, but my point is that it was shot hand held @ ISO 2000 with a fast lens, so lets forget the tripod since most of the time point & shooters aren't going to be walking around with one anyway unless they're intentionally after a shot like that to start with.

That is easily the most awesome thing I have seen in ages.

Very nice pictures ... but just what about them is it a P&S can't do?
Blurred background perhaps, other than that I don't quite see what it would be.

Have you not seen the EXIF? 500mm at f/4 on a 7D (so that's 800mm equivalent) at ISOs 2000 and 1000 respectively. Exactly which compact cameras can match those specs? And deliver that IQ?

Sure, if you look at it that way, but for the casual viewer that's not exactly obvious. :)
Some zoos will let you get very near the animals, and in those cases P&S will get you great results too.

I'm not knocking it, I photograph small birds and indoor sports, so I'm aware of the benefits of our SLR gear ...
