DSLR= Complete control over everything involved in taking a photo=better results if you know what you are doing. You will produce sharper, more saturated images. If you take the same pic of any object with a p/s and then take it with a dslr (with a quality lens of course) you will most likely produce a better image with the dslr. Dslrs allow faster bursts of shots, more control over lighting and metering, more options. You feel like a master when holding a dslr just because of the unlimited things you can do with it. P/S are restrictive and basic and are good to just carry around to snap a shot, thus the name point and shoot. DSLRs are more intuitive and allow for more creativity just because of all the control you have. There are hundreds of different options of lenses, ranging from very cheap to very expensive, from low quality to high quality, from general use to professional use, allowing each photographer to have complete control over their style and their final product.

Awesome photos Fretnomore!!!.... I'm convinced ;) I think I'll go out and get another DSLR.

Seriously, what lens were they shot with? 70-200 f2.8??

The swimmer and the Barn Swallows: 300/2.8, the wakeboarder and the Goldeneye: 500/4

One comment would be to paint out the drop in the swimmers mouth...

Thanks, I agree, have to fix that.

Great galley btw but I wish it showed EXIF data.

The pictures usually have EXIF included, so you can see it with ViewEXIF or some similar add-on to your browser. The gallery software (Coppermine) is a bit thin on the EXIF support though.

FretNoMore that picture with the three little birds about to get fed is amazing.

imo dSLR's excel at action shots where the lack of noise at higher ISO's really pays dividends, other than that the P&S's really do a pretty decent job, especially if you start to get into the so called 'bridge' ones.

I used my Panasonic FZ30 for macros all last summer and managed to get some pretty decent pictures out of it ( http://twitch1977.deviantart.com (external link) if anyone cares). If I hadn't taken a photography course that piqued my interest of doing non-macro pictures I probably would have stayed with my Panasonic. However just from a few test shots the lack of shutter lag sure is nice. :D

DSLR's attract girls.

OK, Mark, that's all the convincing that I need. Now I need a detailed equipment list.

Seriously, I don't think that it is necessary to convince anyone that they need a DSLR. If they don't think that they need one, then they don't. When you decide that there is more that you would like to do that is beyond the capability of your present camera, you will very likely know it even if you don't know specifically what you need.

Great stuff in this thread!

I had a lot to choose from as my subject matter tends to be in the realm of the super telephoto, where only an SLR will do, but I fall back on these often as my favorite "OMFG" shots :)

Just picking up a dslr would convert someone. Someone that likes pictures. I have a friend that sees no advantage to a dslr and loves his Canon A70. Actually, my old A70 I sold him. Since buying a dslr I had used my P&S but maybe 3 times at most and sold it to him because it was gathering dust and depreciating by the minute. The shutter lag, or lack thereof, is what sold me at first. By the time a P&S focuses my 4 year old has switched moods. Even my wife likes the dslr. Now if I could only get her to let me show her how to use it. I always leave it in some funky setting and her pics always come out blurred. Kids move way to fast.

Pete-eos, the puck was going at the goalie. That's why he's there. As I recall, he blocked it with his chest.

As CDS said, anything super telephoto requires a DSLR. And anything 'studio'...
