Bogen handles several brands, Manfrotto being one of the more popular. Manfrotto makes many different sizes, types, and weights of tripods.

Light weight tripods are not necessarily "good" tripods. The purpose of a tripod is to hold a camera as close to perfectly steady as possible under a variety of situations. To shave weight off either makes the tripod extremely expensive or less rigid.

You need to define a lot of variables when choosing a tripod. Included in the thinking process is the size and weight of the camera and heaviest lens(es) that you would be using on it. Also, you need to consider how tall the tripod would be with the center column fully down (you never want to use a tripod that always needs the center column extended, as that causes instability). Where you are going to use it is an important part of the equation, as some tripods are not very well designed for rough-terrain use. The list of variables goes on and on.

My favorite general-purpose tripod and head combination is the Bogen/Manfrotto 3021BPro (Manfrotto 055ProB outside the U.S.), topped off with the Bogen/Manfrotto 488RC2 ball head. This works very well for me (and a lot of other folks on the forum) in a great variety of situations and with some fairly heavy equipment on the tripod.

I swear I don't work for these people, I'm just a very happy customer.. Do a search on the forums for Dynatran, you can get a great tripod for under $100 depending on what you're looking for.

And I'm glad he does. I bought Skip's recommendations for monopod & head (680B & 486 RC2) and then tripod & head (as noted above) and couldn't be happier :D

It's not very light but y ou will never have to worry about your camera falling over if you go with a Bogen 3051. I have loved mine for years and it's fast to set up, one touch and extremely secure. Light might not be the best way if you have any larger lenses to take care of.
Cheers,
Roy

When folks ask the same question day after day without searching for existing threads, I think it's just easier to pop in a pre-written chunk of text than to put in a link to the other threads.

As long as others don't think the information is out of line, I probably will continue to do it the easy way :p .

By the responses I see, folks who get the combination for their own use like it as much as I do.
