Crop of a crop

This isn't Canon EOS, but might be of interest to those looking for the most image quality possible in a DSLR.

Hasselblad has two crop format DSLR's the H3D 22 and the H3D 39 with 22 and 39 megapixels respectively. As with most camera manufacturers they have used their form lens mount but cropped the sensor from 60 mm x 60 mm to 36 mm x 48 mm. Most manufacturers other than Canon have a problem with angle of incidence of light in corners of digital sensor when the sensor is made the same size as a film image.

Now Hasselblad is calling the 36 x 48 mm sensor full frame an have introduced a new crop camera, the H3D 31 that has a sensor that is only 31 mm x 48 mm and has only 31 megapixels. Hasselblad considers that the 22 and 39 mp cameras are mainly for studio work, but the new 31 mp model is for mobile photographers and will be the camera of choice for professionals who have been using 35 mm digital SLRs. Guess who makes 35 mm digital SLR's. You can count the manufacturers on one finger. Of course the H3D 31 is competitively priced at only $24,000 US. (Since the price is only about $16,000 more than a 1Ds Mk II and there are about 16 more megapixels, you can think of the additional cost as only being about $1,000 per megapixel or $.001 per pixel. Who can't afford a tenth of a cent a pixel?)

Also of interest, like Canon with their EF-S lenses, Hasselblad has now introduced a 28 mm lens that can only be used on their digital cameras.

I guess I don't understand their sales model here. No one with a collection of good glass (Nikon or Canon) is going to switch over to a system like that. Most new digital photographers are not going to drop that kind of money - so are they going after the luxury market?

Hassies have long been known as the workhorses of Medium Format, but I just don't see this one.

maybe if someone actually holds a studio like this or larger full of profoto/broncolor, shoots there all day and is incorporated...


as a business expense it doesnt seem that much

i dont get the incentive though. canon's 16 mp isn't really a bad quality sensor to put it mildly. is the quality increase that huge?

sorry for the lack of caps. i've been chopping lettuse with my henkels and chopped off a piece of my hand, so it's temporarily out of order.

How BIG do you want to print something? I figured 16mp is enough to print HUGE prints. I mean, they use 6mp shots for billboard printing. What would you gain by having 48mp?

and 25K isn't that big. My buddy runs a small video company run out of his basement and is a one man operation. He hires contractors for big jobs. He showed me his $12,000 carbon tripod and his two $300,000 HD video cams. He LAUGHS when I tell him how much the 1Ds Mk2 costs.
We're just small fish compared to the many larger scale operations.

Maybe a REALLY clean ISO 800?

I know a couple of commercial photographers who do high end shots for advertising and portrait purposes. The used to shoot Hasselblads and switched to Canon 1Ds mk II's for some of this work claiming the image quality was just as good as they got with medium format film. Now they have gone back to using digital backs on the Hasselblads for all this type of work.
