30D/400D AF-assist?

What are these circles for? On the 400D they don't seem to do anything, is this also the case for the 30D? Did Canon just put the circle/lens there to make it look like they actually af-assist lamps when they don't?

Its used for red-eye reduction and also used for the self timer. See page 15 and 55 of the manual.


Not sure why, but call me JJ.
I used to hate math but then I realised decimals have a point.

Aah, never used the self timer, so I would have never seen it light up from that. I can't recall ever seeing it light up at all actually, but I don't guess I'm on that side of the camera when taking pictures.

AF assist only works when on One shot AF.
