This is a bit of fun but with a possible serious side. There is one word that keeps cropping up and is used with such abandon that it has almost lost meaning and that word is…..

Distracting

“That is an excellent shot of the shooting but I find the shadow of the tree on the left of the grassy knoll a little distracting

"That is a great shot of the winning goal but the guy in the bright shirt (10th row up & fourth in from the left) is rather distracting"

"The model looks great and the lighting is fantastic but shadow cast by her foot on the backdrop is very distracting"

Am I the only one who is irritated by this?

Are there any other words that annoy you?

Or is it me?

I'm surprised someone would say this onsidering it's IMO a pretty valid critique.

If you're trying to do a bridal portrait and there is a naked man masturbating in the background, it's distracting. Distracting elements ruin photographs. It seems like a valid critique to me

I alway's took it as meaning " the shots quite good " but one's really thinking WHAT a load of rubish that distracting bit Grabs all the attention ;)

You should take it as a compliment. It's if you're back there and nobody notices you that you ought to start feeling insecure

I guess we all have our little pet peeves. I do not find the word "Distracting" a problem. The problem I have is that sometimes things that are being called distracting I don't find distracting. Or at least I didn't notice it until someone brought it up.

My big Pet Peave on this forum is people who bash Point and Shoot cameras. They have their place and in the hands of a good photographer produce excellent results.

The one word that really bothers me when reading critiques is "nit", especially when preceded by "minor". I had never heard that word before I started browsing and reading photography forums. I don't see it here too often, but at some other sites (especially nature photo forums) that word is used quite liberally.

I also find "great capture" or "well captured" amusing for some reason.

OK...minor nits covered...

Most likely a derivative of 'nit pick' - a nit being the eggs of a parasite. Way to go, calling peoples' photos parasitic eggs. ;)

Great post, but I found the smileys at the bottom distracted from your original intent

It's what you start picking after your nose is thoroughly clean.
