Manfrotto 488 question

I'm shortly going to be getting a Manfrotto 488 ball head, and was planning on getting the RC2 version with the quick release plate.

However I was just looking at prices, and the version without the RC2 is actually more expensive.

Why is this? I have heard someone say that the RC2 isn't great. Would I be better off getting the version without the quick release and getting a third party quick release system? If so, what would you recommend?

I have used the RC2 system for several years and am completely satisfied with it for 35mm SLR-sized cameras and lenses as large as my Canon 70-200mm f/2.8L IS.

Were I going to use medium format cameras such as the Hasselblad, I might consider the RC4 system. I do have a geared head that used the RC4 quick change plate, but I used that mainly for a large telescope.

Who says the RC2 isn't great? You may have heard people recommend other QR systems with supe-ginormous lens combos, or for non-Manfrotto heads, but I don't think anyone's ever actually said not to get an RC2 for general use absent one of those restrictions.

Unless you are using a super telephoto the RC2 certainly gets my vote...I have one on most all my gear.

They goofed in the pricing? The 488RC2 was bought before and the 488 basic after a wholesale price increase? No, I don't know if there's been a wholesale price increase, but it would explain the difference.
