Buying a new feeder!

My mom said she will buy a feeder. My priority was buying a paintball gun but she keeps saying no. I don't need it now anyways, because in May my brother (who has lots of $$ because he...has a job), so I'll get mine when he gets his.

At the moment I have up to $60 to spend on a feeder. I'm thinking of this one:

or this one:
http://www.amazon.com …-4114568?ie=UTF8&s=garden (external link)

I don't usually get suet cakes or anything, the downy and nuthatch in my backyard eat sunflower seed without a problem. I'm probably not going to buy it from those links directly, but that type of feeder yes. I also might need a pole mount :)

If anybody has any other suggestions, please post. I want a feeder that's mostly squirrel proof (squirrels get around anyways, but still). The biggest thing is that it needs to support multiple birds, including large birds such as blue jays. :D That's all

Why not build one? I dunno...might end up being more of a hassle than not...but it's worth a try...as a weekend project. This way, you build one to the specs that you want. Hope you get lots of bird shots...good luck.

I could build one but then it doesn't have cool features and it's easier for squirrels to get grip on. I'd build a bird house of wood, but not a feeder :P

Those are both great feeders and quite squirrel-resistant. Probably one of the most reliable feeders out there for attracting numerous species. The ground feeders (juncos, sparrows, cardinals, mourning doves, etc.) will get whatever falls on the ground.

The second one doesn't look as durable as the first, but I'm not sure as I've never tried it. I'll probably get the 2nd one, along with a pole. Hanging it to a tree is inviting squirrels to attack :(

I hate to tell you this but I do not think there is anything squirrel proof. I have the first one you posted, the green one, and they finally figured out that the way to get at the seed is to get all the way on top and stretch upside down without putting weight on the bar.

I watched over a weekend while one figured it out, then the others on the bottom watched till they caught on, No more squirrel proof for me.

Yes, I understand squirrels are crazy :P I simply need something that can hold more seed, support bigger birds, and last longer than the piece of plastic I use now. One day I will invent the most squirrel-proof stuff ever. Just you wait!

Oh yea, I think one of the squirrels was in my garage! The garage is closed mostly all day, I don't know how it could have gotten in. Either a squirrel or junco. I was kind of scared when I saw all the sunflower shells laying around. I thought to myself "What on earth was trying to eat these shells"

Alright well we bought the first one and it's been delivered. I'm going to use the pole mount system. Problem right now is that I can't dig a 1 foot hole in the ground because I can't seem to find a REAL shovel, and the ground is very hard. :( I am not even going to think about hanging it from a tree or anything

A shovel wouldn't work here. More like a hammer and chisel. Maybe use a sturdy knife and your hands, if it isn't frozen. :)

I can barely get past 1/2" in the ground! It's like completely frozen ice cream. I tried a chisel and hammer, and that didn't work all that great. The chisel went in yes, but couldn't move it around too much.

I'll work harder on the weekend, didn't have too much time outside today.
