So here are a few more from Saturday on Whernside. I have a re-edit of the first shot with which I was not best happy with, I'll let you decide which is better. Comments and Crits welcomed.

I stood 30 minutes or so waiting for the sun to come out, next time I will use the time to find a better angle

As I was descending I got one last shaft of late light - it is a bit over compressed I may have to re-save at some point.

Neil, another great series of shots. I think your second edit on wherside2 (by the way, I can see the embedded images this time!) is an improvement on the first edit - I didn't see it first time round but there was a colour cast to the snow. The sky has also darkened a little bit adding to the dramatic nature. The browner tones in the f/g also look a bit more natural when the two images are compared side by side.

As for the rest, number 2 makes me think I'm standing there looking over the valley. I was wondering what this would look like in a different aspect ratio - 10x8 (or 8x10 as it is portrait). With the last one, even though it doesn't have the depth of view as the others, I still keep coming back to it. The only thing I would do differently would be to have a person in it, the path leads up to the sky and it would be nice if there was another element there for the eye to rest on. Now that's just my personal preference - not saying that's how it should be:)

I linked the images to my site, easier than eventually doing both anyway.

The crop of image two is already considered as I think the sky is lost a little with all the green, but thanks for that, means I am thinking the right way.

Unfortunately it is not a path as such and anyway nobody was daft enough to be up there with the wind that was blowing icicles down my back :) I had a very small margin of sun light to get the shot, about 5 secs, after waiting another 10 minutes or so. Without the light there was no shot, but someone did cross the stile! Typical :)

I will re-export the last, it is destroyed... :|

Great set of photos! This edit of #1 might look a little more dramatic but otherwise they both look nice to me. I love the colors in all of them.
Do you ever have a problem with really blue skies or dark clouds looking splotchy when you get big prints of them? I do.

What do you mean by splotchy Carol?

Carol, after a bit of pulling you can increase the noise in darker areas (shadows are a bugger) the worst culprit is shadow/highlight tool so I try not to use it often. NDG filters help alot for this as exposing for the whites is not as necessary for skies. Photoshop now doesn't do a bad job of reducing noise but I tend to stick with Noise Ninja, works a treat when used carefully.

Thanks for the comments!

Maybe I should try Noise Ninja. I guess it must be noise but even if I reduce the noise it seems the sky colors just don't always blend as nicely as they should.
Exile, take a look at the sky in my post from a week ago, Winter in the Rockies. I don't know why the sky would be noisy at ISO-200( It was super windy so I moved from 100) I didn't darken the sky other than by using a polarizer.
I have just noticed this in a few of my photos at larger sizes.

like the last one the best and #3, for the lovely colours. I like the way they're glowing in the sun!

Carol, even with the 5D amazing noise capability I find that if I have to do any contrast work (levels, curves) to shadows or blues (sky and greys around there) noise becomes much more obvious even at 50ISO, thats why NDG's are so important.

It was worth waiting for those precious seconds of light then? :) Thanks
