I recall the refresh option was a leftover from the ni-Cad days and that the charger hasn't changed much if at all for many years. Ni-Mh batteries don't need a refresh.

that being said, I do know the batteries are just stacked AA Ni-Mh batteries with some diodes, thermisters etc. and that they CAN be updated to 2500mAh AA cells if you're handy.

Too bad the 1D batteries are $125.00

I bought a 3rd party (PowerSmart made in China)1D battery from ebay the other week for $30 AUD, I have used it a couple of time without any trouble - the first time I took over 1700 shots and it was still going strong.

Take a look at this one at NSN. Unlike some of the second party batteries, this one apparently fits really well.

I have no experience with the other batteries - not saying they're bad, just saying I haven't used them, but I've bought 4 of the Camera Devices lithium ion batteries for my other cameras before and have been very pleased with them.

If you do decide to change your pack, save the cover and latch to 'transplant' them onto the 3rd party batteries. That's the first step on the Fred Miranda link cosworth posted.

I cannot recommend Canon NP_E3 batteries. I bought a brand new NP-E3 genuine Canon battery about 5 weeks ago now, and it's a dud. I get around 120-130 shots her charge (and yes, I've done the refresh/charge thing etc). Canon Australia have tested it and said that it's within 'spec', and that a bunch of other NP-E3 batteries off the production line that they tested were all within the 120-130 range. This is absolute bull****, they should be doing 300-500 on a full charge with my 1D. I intend to take this up with the NSW Department of Fair Trading and have Canon done for false and misleading advertising.

I cannot recommend genuine Canon NP-E3 batteries, don't waste your money, buy the 3rd party ones for a quarter (or even less) of the price, and better performance, rather than pay the CHFT (Canon hostage fee tax). Stuff the weather sealing bull**** as well. Canon is damn well lucky that it's not financially viable for me to switch to Nikon, otherwise I'd most certainly have switched after their totally ******* treatment of me.

I'm not a happy camper, and will do everything in my power from now on to badmouth Canon products.

Dave

hmm, something is definetly up. I wonder if they took a "memory" of a smaller amount, the disadvantage of running non lithium ion batteries. I can get well over a thousand on a charge, but I don't chimp much if at all, and have the display turned off most of the time. Just fyi, reviewing on the LCD and IS lenses drain the battery like no other.

So your on a Canon board and you're just going to badmouth Canon products while using them? I understand that something bad happened, but I'm sure theres a way to get a new battery from Canon if you find the "right" person.

My 1Ds uses three batteries for every one used by my 1Dmk2n....They have certainly improved battery management with each successive model of the 1D.
