This is my first time being at a rally. These were all taken with the kit lens. The camera couldn't focus fast enough, so I put the lens in manual. I'd like to try AI servo with a better lens next time.

I like getting the snow flying up in the air behind the cars. But what's the general concensus with rally shots, are close ups better, or places where you can see the course too,...?

Thanks,

They look like ideal rally conditions.
Like the top Scoob one, perhaps cropped a bit tighter to show the car and that long straight.
The kit lens is not the best but should be ok on A1 focus at 1/250 1/320 if you have the light.

I like the first one because you can see where the car is headed towards. I think that's a good rule whether it's cars or running animals.

I just did some snowy car shots too with AI Servo on.

Yes, you'll struggle with the kit lens. It just doesn't have the AF speed to cope with fast moving vehicles. Good work though.

As far as close-ups vs wider shots, the answer (as always) is a little of each.

I live in Grand Rapids. I wanted to go up to this but it was kind of far away and I found something else to do. Maybe next year. A decent motorsports lens for the money is the Canon 100-300mm f4.5-5.6 USM. It has the USM for fast focus tracking. I got mine used for ~$200. It will hold me over until I get out of school and can get a $900 Sigma 100-300 F4 EX HSM.
One thing you have to remember is that in a snow dominated scene like this, the camera will want to make the snow gray, so some exposure compensation needs to be dialed in to bring the exposure up.
