Kit 18-55 Question

The Canon Museum lists 4 18-55mm lenses, how do you tell which is which?
18-55mm
18-55mm USM
18-55mm II
18-55mm II USM
Doesn't really matter, but I was curious and thought someone might know.

The USM ones will have ultrasonic wording on the side and on the lens cap. I have an ultrasonic kit lens and one regular kit lens. The II models will have a II on the face of the lens somewhere after the canon and aperture labeling. The USM ones focus a little faster and quieter, and those lenses tend to go for maybe $30 over the regular kit lenses.

I didn't know anyone would be this interested in the kit lens but the first generation of the kit lens came with the 300D and 20D. Japanese kit lenses came with USM and USM versions are available for sale separately elsewhere.

With the 350D and onward, series II started. Canon officially stated that the optics are the same but just relabeled it as a second generation, but according to tests at dpreview, stevesdigicams, and dcresource, the II generation seems to be a touch sharper. Again, Japanese models get USM and lenses sold seperatly come with USM motors.
