It was really overcast and snowing hard (we got 8 inches while we were out) and neither of our sleds werent running that well so they are nothing crazy but still good practice -- this was my first time shooting in manual mode really.

350d, Kit Lense, Tripod

I am just not excited about any and when I tried the flash it lit up the pooring snow. What can I do to make these more sharp and exciting? I feel like my aparture is off and that I have a lot exposure issues

First off, nice sled :) i like the white panels.

Next, the link that photosguy gave is a great resource, with alot of good info.

Lastly, i took a stab at these myself, (as per image editing ok) and this is what i ended up with. I am by far no pro at this, so if someone else can improve on it still.. then we'll both be learning.

Anyways, here they are.

Steps for both were as follows:

Levels adjustment > contrast > Hue & saturation (to try and get the snow white again without losing detail) > shadow/highlight tool (to get detail back in the snow) > leveled horizon (shot of you riding)> USM >crop > save

If you're shooting in Manual mode, are you shooting RAW?

I really like what you did with the last one, thats similiar to some things that I had tried (I shot about 100 pics, played with like 30 in photoshop ;)). I did notice on that last picture some of the yellow turned orange, but thats not a giant detail. I'll probably have to clean my sled up next time for the photos, thanks for the kind words! Thats only it's second time out dressed in white.

I feel like the other one of my buddy riding on his blue rev could be better if it had more detail or something. I would like to find a way though to make my photos come out as we had adjusted straight from the camera - and no I am not in RAW. I should be though, but I have never used it. One thing I'd like to add is that on this photos I was maybe even a bit over exposed as per the -2/+2 meter on the camera when metering directly at the subject.

Well you have to over-expose due to the snow. If you shoot in Raw, You would have much more room to "play" during post, alot of your exposure issues can be worked out in raw quite easily.

Don't be afriad of RAW. Raw is your friend :)

I feel like they are underexposed (dark?) straight out of the camera?

shooting in snow, if you don't compensate for all that white, the camera will "underexpose" the subject of your shots. Do a test, go take some pictures of the snow outside and see what kind of manual settings you need to get proper exposure of the subject your shooting.

Shoot I wish I could go play today! But it's -1* here, "feels like -17" and I just dont want to be out in that at all.

Here's another after modification, I actually like this one. Anyone else?

I like this last one.....Throw some text in the right, down low. Use the yellow/orange color to match. As for text..use your imagination.

Plus it helps to be somewhere other than Michigan that gets sunshine, like Colorado? :D
