I find the Bogen/Manfrotto 488RC2 to be an ideal head for general-purpose work. It packs and is carried easily without the projection of the hand grip or the handles of a 3-way head. It works quite well for me in many kinds of applications.

I have tried the two different grip types and don't care for either one.

Yep, another vote for the 488RC2 - I did have a 3-way head (141RC2) but after getting this ball-head recently I wish I'd got it years ago!

I nearly bought one of them a month or so back and what I liked was it seemed you could wiggle it all around with one hand and then let the grip go and it's gonna lock solid ... so potentially cool. But in the end I got another 488 RC2. First one did the job great and so why mess with what works?

I have the 322RC2 and love it. Holds even my longest glass and very quick to use. The handle makes it much quicker to get into position than a standard ball head. It however is not a good head if you are going to shoot panorama shots. The 488RC2 is made for it.

You don't take a photograph. You ask, quietly, to borrow it.
