This may sound rediculous ... how do you go about light metering with A series cameras (I have the 630) ... I'm readying Bryan Peterson's Understanding Exposure right now and trying to apply everything to my point and shoot ... ... anyone have an idiots guide to for a series users?

I think the Advanced Camera User Guide is the best reference although it may be somewhat confusing if you do not know the meaning of all the terms used.
I do not know the book but I guess you will be asked to set the shutter speed, the aperture and the ISO to deal with exposure.
Amongst all the shooting modes of your camera, only Tv, Av and M can be used to gain direct control over those parameters.
- In Tv mode you set the shutter speed and the camera selects aperture for the best exposure.
- In Av mode you set the aperture and the camera selects shutter speed for the best exposure.
- In M mode you set both the shutter speed and aperture values and the camera notifies with numbers from -2 to 0 to +2 in the bottom center of the LCD how many f stops are you below or above the optimum exposure (0) as measured by the camera exposure meter.
I think
M mode will be the best for you while follow the book’s instructions.
You can not read exposure directly in EV values in your camera, but the numbers described above are a precise guide for correct manual exposure.
Read the following pages in your manual to understand how to set the main parameters and read exposure:
- pg.13 – Information Displayed on the LCD Monitor.
- pg.43 – Setting the shutter Speed.
- pg.45 – Setting the Aperture.
- pg.46 – Manually Setting the Shutter Speed and Aperture.
- pg.55 – Switching between Metering Modes.
- pg.57 – Adjusting the Exposure Compensation ( for Tv and Av, disabled in M mode).
- pg.69 – Adjusting the ISO speed.
P.S.: The manual in
.pdf format helps a lot because you can search the words in acrobat reader.
