Set off for a ride over the Dales today but only got 10 miles when I saw a hot air balloon over Wetherby; so I turned off the A1 and headed in it's direction, another mile down the road and I was as close as I was going to get with out travelling over ploughed fields; not recommended on a 420KG GoldWing motorcycle. I pulled up at the side of the road and got out the camera, got a few good shots with the 100-400 but it was that far away even at 400 it was still only filling half the screen. I put on the 2X TC and took a few more, that lens never ceases to amaze me, 100-400 fully open with 2x TC hand held; I'm amazed how well it came out.

Impressive. We have them flying over our house most mornings and I usually get a shot or two with the 100-400 - so I agree with your comments about the lens.

That looks good, Mick!

With that much opportunity, try something like this film shot: http://img.photobucket.com …General/Balloons_01-1.jpg (external link)

hmmm

I have a few like that - but not as grainy.

The sun is at a lower altitude, too. Multiple balloons, too. There is a big festival of them coming up so it will be interesting.

In Micks shot, I like the colours in the balloon and the clarity in the shot - nicely exposed shy, too. Sometimes an exposure on the balloon will give a blown out sky.

Great advertizement for the 100-400mm Mick. Of course when you have all that glass focussing on the 1D Mk II... you really are working with the best.

I am interested in purchasing that lens for my aviation interests. Right now however I am running with the 300D which is the weak link in the chain. I fancy a 5D and I am glad to learn that the 100-400 ILS works with both full frame and 1.6.

Thanks for sharing the info.

Madness. ;)

It also works well with my 1D MkIIn; which is a 1.3 crop ;) :D If you're wanting a camera for action/fast moving shots I would have thought the 1D MkII would be a better choice.
