I think there is a trend here, that people buy one of the four Canon 70-200 L zooms quite soon after joining the POTN forum. How long did it take for you?

Forever, I am yet to purchase a 70-200 lens :). With that focal range, I primarily shoot indoor sports which is ideal for the primes, not the zooms with a typical max aperature of 2.8. The 70-200 zoon lenses are great lenses, just not for me.

I remember joining here and asking about a cheaper zoom that might suit me for birds or wildlife for a while and I suggested the Sigma 70-300mm APO. I was given a lot of advice to get the 70-200mm instead.

I did get the Sigma and it was a decent lens but not fast enough for UK Winter shooting, so I got the L as originally advised but was way too short. I was then advised to get the a TCon which I did. Of course, the lens was then too dark and still not long enough.

Since then I have taken advice with a pinch of salt and tend to only listen to people I know have the lens I may be interested in or who's opinion over a long period has been balanced and valid.

I liked the f4.0 IQ but preferred the Sigma 2.8 that I replaced it with. Even so, I will probably get the 4.0 IS L in the next month or two.

EDIT: Worth saying that I only lost about £5 on the Sigma and then made about £20 on the L and the TCon sale, so no harm done. I tend to buy SH or shop around for best prices so buying a lens like the L and selling later is no big deal financially.

Maybe add, " Don't feel I need one", also. But I put "thinking of it"

I did think about them when I bought my Sigmas. The f/4 just didn't have the reach I needed. So I went with the Ex 100-300. When I wanted a 2.8, I went with the Ex 50-150, because I like this focal lenght. I don't regret either one.

When and if I get one, it will be the 70-200mm L 2.8 IS. But I am thinking a good prime might be better for evening baseball games.

You dont' have a poll option for me. I held out for almost 2 years, and when I did purchase one, I purchased another within 2 months. I could kick myself for waiting so long to purchase this lens.
