Hey guys, I own the xti and I was thinking of getting the Sigma 30mm f/1.4. Would there be any reason to keep the "nifty fifty"? I like the shots I take with it, but for indoors the focal length is just too long (50*1.6+80mm).

I'd like to hear some of your comments & suggestions. Thanks!

I sold mine the day I bought the Sigma....it'll never get used if you keep it

the only way i'd keep it is if I had a set of extension tubes, I might make it my "macro" lens

I have both, and have no intention of getting rid of the 50 1.8 - it has its place, it is a tiny lens that takes up no room at all, and is worth so little on resale as a used lens that there is no way I'd go to the trouble of selling it. and it goes well with my extension tubes.

It makes a good portrait lens for head shots/ upper body shots on a 1.6 crop camera, while the 30 1.4 is better for wider group shots/ interiors.

I would also advise that you part with nothing till you are sure that you are happy with the sigma. Seems there a re a fair few out there with focussing issues - though it is well worth the effort of having one calibrated.

What Steve said ... I can walkaround at night in a city with the 30mm and know I can have some framing flexibility but the 50mm I would find too narrow. I still have a couple of 50mm's and use one or other as necessary. If I only wanted one then I would prefer a 30mm 1.4.

I have the 30 also and recently sold my 50 1.8 to help fund the purchase. I agree is has it's place. Just keep it. But I do agree it's a tad too long indoors especially when you are shooting inside a house at a party or what have you. Having to back up (potentially bumping into things) sucks.
