Took this at lovers key state park last week. I usually have trouble getting details in the feathers but I think it being sunset and the light softer than the usual daytime shots helped.

I also suggest you shoot raw if you're not already doing so. At the conversion to jpeg, you can adjust exposure, brightness and other levels to recover lost detail, contrast and saturation.
