Posing really is an art. You need to listen, observe the couple and see what they are comfortable with. Some need instructions like the blinds, other not so much. Just have to make sure they are comfortable doing what you ask them to do.

I completely agree with everyone here...posing is hard, but our job is to make it look like it was no big deal..:))) Most of the time I'm being plain goofy with my clients to the point I may make a complete idiot out of myself but whatever makes them feel comfortable with me, I guess..haha :):) Oh and I always always make sure they're comfy in their pose and try and get the photo a second before because that's when they usually smile and look at each other as they try to position themselves....

Just a few examples:

She was a very shy girl so in this shot I asked her to lay on her tummy against a beautiful window light and just look at me:

Here I asked the B&G to sit on the steps in just be in love, hold hands, look at each other...

I asked the groom to stand with his back to the bride and she had to lean towards him...

Here I asked John to teach Tammy how to play the guitar..haha

Here the photo I was going for was the last one, her looking at me, him looking at her...the other two evolved as they were standing there:

I'm loveing these Svetlana!

One thing that I hate is boring family photo poses. This family was so fun they were rockin so many different ideas so I asked them to all pretend to fight and I got this one snapped.

IMAGE: http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4094/4868842295_b739ff7491_b.jpg

This picture the people were just walking in front of me and I told them to stop and just talk to each other for a second about how the day was going, i asked them to hold hands and then just tell each other how the day was going and I snapped this. Sometimes the most casual moments between a bride and groom reveal the best photographs.

A few more examples of posing...

Asked Doug to kiss Kasia's hand....it always bring a smile to a bride's face..:)

Another "kissing hand" shot:

Here's the one where I asked them to look serious into the camera, with Kasia leaning against Doug.

Back to back, Maggie looking back at Greg:

Laying on their tummies and kissing, feet in the air...:)

Oh, and another thing that really helps the subject visualize what you want them to do is to actually do the pose yourself first. If I want her sitting on that log, I'll sit on it first, showing her where I want her legs, arms, hands. Monkey See, Monkey Do is so very effective.

FamilyJules, you are absolutely right on that. It takes me a 30 seconds to SHOW them a pose and then tweak it when they mimic it, or 5 minutes to try to direct them into it. I shoot a lot of babies and I keep a flexible baby doll on hand to show the parents how I want the baby positioned. Monkey see, monkey do is a great way to put it.

I don't agree with the notion that people should be "allowed" to just do what they do and then we roll with it. It becomes clear very quickly which people you can do that with, and most people NEED and WANT the direction. Every now and then I'll encounter someone who intuitively knows what to do, or they have modelling experience, but that is rare.

Sometimes I will talk to the guy privately just before a setup, and ask him to whisper something naughty in his girl's ear when he sees I'm about to take a shot. This always works.

Lots of good stuff on here! I generally abide by the just let stuff happen policy. "go over there and just relax, talk about your day for a minute" a lot of times you get great stuff. and being funny does help.

In this one I told the woman she had sexy model face going on

IMAGE: http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k21/Jazzhoodlum/DJ-1web.jpg

I told all the guys to start getting "gangster on my ass"
IMAGE: http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k21/Jazzhoodlum/DJ-35web.jpg

the "look down" when used sparringly is always nice, highlights the lashes, gives a nice feel

Just found this (external link) on Photography Blog, a free Ebook (PDF) for "Wedding Posing"

Direct download link: http://www.oliver-cameron.com/posingsample.pdf (external link) (from http://www.increasedknowledge.com/ (external link))

Just looked through it and it follows the subject on this thread pretty well, mostly just photos and a description of "why it's a good pose". Kind of fun.
