i picked up a 75-300mm 4-5.6 III usm for 150cnd. At first i was skeptical but it takes great pics...who says u need a 1600 2.8 L series

They look pretty good to me. "Fast" is great if/when we shoot sports, but most of my shots are at f/4 & above, so I only have one Canon f/2.8.
