I am looking to buy the EW-83J hood for my Canon ef-s 17-55mm that is on the way. The genuine canon hood sells for $49.99.

There's generic brands on eBay that sell for $17 total (over $30 bucks less). The design looks basically the same as the Canon. Does anyone have any experience or comments on eBay generic Canon hoods?

I recently bought the hood for my Canon 10-22 from "goshotcamera," so while I do not have any experience with your particular seller or that particular hood itself, I was quite impressed with the "non-genuine" hood that I got at a much cheaper price. The way it fits and looks, it's as good as the one that says, "Canon."

Absolutely horrible. Cheap EW-83E equivalent jammed and scraped the hood threads pretty bad. It's so bad I would rather go without the hood or buy the real thing.

I got one off ebay for my 50mm 1.4. It looks exactly like the OEM, but was only like $14.00. Only thing that really gives it away is that when the hood is on, the type is on the side not the top.

Well worth it!

I bought the EW-63II equivalent, it's just like the real canon branded hood apart from I can't reverse it :-( I've bought an original now, it will be the only non branded hood I will ever buy now I suspect.

just go for the cannon one. they are easier to get on and you can screw em on backwards. i have two of the generic brand, one rubber and one metal. if i didnt buy them for really cheap lenses(75-300 mk3 and 50 1.8) i would have gone for the canon ones.

Update: I got the generic EW-60C hood for my EFS 18-55 from OP's link and it is fuzzy inside and it DOES fit backwards for storage. I am very happy with my $11.94 investment.

You can see that CPL mounted and you can get your fingers in there to turn it.

I have that exact generic hood from goshotcamera for my 17-55. Pros & cons:

Pros: It's WAY cheaper, it blocks light appropriately without vignetting, it reverses just fine, and it shipped fast.

Cons: There's only two. It's not a "Canon" (for those who have to have the name). And the bigger one for some people: Mine doesn't always lock tightly on the lens. Yesterday I noticed it had slipped slightly to one side while in the bag & was vignetting just a tiny bit. Pushed it back into place and no further issues. Now I'll make sure to check it as soon as I take it out of the bag.

For me, at this stage of my photography career, it was a no brainer--I need too many other things to spend that much on a "genuine" piece of flocked plastic.
