I am expecting to receive the lens by the end of the week from B&H. I also ordered B+W UV MRC and Circular Polarizer filters along with it. My question to the owners of this lens:

Do you use the hood (EW-83J) with it? The lens is fairly large mounted on the xti and I think adding the hood to it would make it more conspicuous.

I'd like to hear from the owners of the ef-s 17-55mm f/2.8. Thanks in advance!

The lens will help improve physical protection, contrast/color, and flare performance. It's worth it.

are you on a mission :D?

you should always use a hood to protect your lens. your $1000 lens in this case.

a hood also blocks unwanted light that can produce flare.

with a CP you'll have a rough time using the OEM hood. what i do (did) is use a screw-in hood which i can turn to adjust the CP.

unfortunately since i have upgraded to the 5d my screw-in hood now vignettes on my 24-70L so i am again looking for another solution, perhaps a folding rubber hood.

The hood is always on mine...it is even possible to rotate the CP with hood snapped on, but a little more convenient when off ;)

You have to weigh being more conspicuous versus maximizing image quality. Not just with this lens, with all your lenses. That and the added protection from bumps, scrapes, drops and the like means that the hood should be bought on all lenses where it is not included and should be a constant companion always.

Sweet new gear for a photogenic new year!

I use the hood on every lens, indoors or out, except when I am using a polarizer - I would use it then, if I could still adjust the polarizer. Protection from both physical damage and flare make it well worthwhile.

unfortunately since i have upgraded to the 5d my screw-in hood now vignettes on my 24-70L so i am again looking for another solution, perhaps a folding rubber hood.

Slightly OT, Ed Rader, but the Canon hood for the 24-70L is perhaps the best hood for a zoom that I have ever seen or used - why would you not be using it?

Have Fun,

Rick

I think the 17-55 looks hilariously huge when on my 300D, and the hood just makes it even funnier. I bought the hood when I bought the lens, so it's pretty much always on the front. Sometimes I'll take it off briefly if I'm using a polarizer, otherwise it's always there.

I havent purchased the hood yet. I haven't really seen a need for it yet, but I plan to...when I make back some of this lost money lol. The 17-55 looks like a cannon (no pun intended) on my 400D. The 400D is almost HIDDEN behind the lens lol.

Even funnier on a 350D.

Try the 70-200 2.8 IS on the 350D, now THATS how you hide the body behind the lens ;)

Thanks for your responses. I decided to get the Canon EW-83J hood. Now trying to find a genuine one for less than $50 is the hard part (other than eBay).

[edit]
If someone can post a picture of the 17-55mm mounted on a Rebel xti with the hood on, I'd really appreciate it. I'd like to see how it all looks on the rebel. Thanks!

Have Fun,

i use the OEM hood all the time unless i am using a CP. when using a CP i like to use a screw in hood which both affords me some flare protection and can be turned to adjust the CP.
