I order one last week from B&H with code discount. I just recieved it today. I borrowed my friend 580ex two weeks ago. It had a leather case and mine has a nylon case. Why did they do this?

Current: Canon 40D w/BG-E2N, Canon 30D, Canon 10-22mm, Canon 17-55mm 2.8 IS w/EW-83J, Canon 70-200mm 2.8L IS, Canon 580EX II, Crumpler 6 Million Bag, and B+W MRC on all my glass.

I THINK they used to come with leather cases then they switched to nylon.

I noticed this too.. I rented one and it came with a leather case, and when I purchased mine it came with a nylon case.

I was also told that the old cases were leather and that the new ones are nylon.. Mine came with nylon. I think the 430's case is different again though I forget how.

I prefer the nylon, my 2nd hand 550EX i just bought came in leather, I suppose the nylon are more rigid and would protect the unit more.

Do people actually use those cases?
I have four cases that came with various flash units. They're in the boxes.

Yes, the nylon does look like it will be able to protect the flash better. But the leather case looks cool. :D

I use mine when I'm not storing my flash in my camera bag. Oh wait...my flash is always in my camera bag.

Are they really leather. They feel more like Pleather. But I'll sell you my leather case for $100 if it's that important:lol:  . I have one for my 420EX too. That's for sale too.
