Your best bit of kit for under 50...

OK. We have a tendency in this forum to rabbit on about equipment that costs hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars/pounds/local currency of your choice. That's all very well and it's great to dream about owning all of these things but it would make life kinda expensive to go out an buy them all

So let's try the other extreme... what bit of equipment do you have in your camera bag that you couldn't live without and cost you less than 50 dollars/pounds/euros/g​roats or whatever?

For me, it would be the Sto-fen "Two-Way UNI" flash bounce adapter. It allows me to get nice, even, soft flash lighting at motor-shows with very high ceilings and often dodgy lighting. It cost me $20.

Lenspen. $16.95

Oakley sunglasses bags. Free and just fine for wiping down a filter.

Two Optech/Pro camera straps - one for each of my cameras. Brilliant for spreading the weight and absorbing the shock of a heavy camera/lens combination.

A agree on both the above.. Lens pens is fantastic. The OpTec straps are the most comfortable I've tried.

Something I'm glad I bought is this blower bulb from hell - Giottos Rocket Air Blower.

It takes dust off the sensor in an instant. Pretty large at 7 1/2 inches but one squeeze is usually all it takes and sensor dust is history.

Plus it's even shaped like a rocket, so it can double as an invading craft attacking your Hot Wheels when it's raining and you have to play inside.


Another item that I like quite a bit is the Pelican Camera Protector. Professional looking raincoat for the dSLR.

I've heard alot of these. Which model is the best bang?

I have 3 - an E-Z Comfort strap on the G3 and Classic Straps on the SLRs. I recommend the 'Classic Strap' or one of the pro models for what you have. The E-Z Comfort strap is light-duty, and I don't think it would do well with the big zooms hanging off of a DSLR.

My 2 cents worth.

eric1 is giving me one with the 50mm i'm buying off of him, i suspect that will fall under this post rather quickly.

However since i do not yet have it...i'd say my omni bounce is the only thing in my bag as of yet.

A little tripod of about 10 inches high. Cost me about $ 20.-- and is great because there's always something to put it on and you don't have to carry a full size tripod.

1) Honkin big green plastic garbage bags (2) (free)
They fold up real small and do not take up any space. Great for placing backpack/gear on if it is wet or damp out. Great for kneeling on to try and keep pants reasonably clean. Great emergency rain poncho.

2) 48" x 96" piece of MossyOak camo material ($12.00 at local huntin shop). Again rolls up real small. Makes a great ground blind and when I drap it over moi and the camera/tripod, everything sort of disappears.

So much for "great deal under $50" because I've already spent $130 getting the good stuff mentioned.

And now I have to find a hunting store....

It will cost you less than $10 to make, you can carry it with you all the time, and it can get you out of some shaky situations.

Ya know what gets me up set? All the good stuff mentioned in here is not available in Canada! No one carries OP Tech straps or the Rocket Boy Blower. Plastic garbage bags we have by the cart load and camo material even the corner store carries. I think I have to move south

I picked up some strap a few days ago. The Op-Techs I saw were too skinny - maybe they didn't have the right one. But I got one that about 2" wide, rolled seam at the edges, with some type of "grip dots" in the middle.

Two great things - it's soft, and it stretches.

What a WORLD of difference over the Canon strap. A neck strap loaded with a 10D and a 100-400 doesn't even *look* comfortable, but now my wife barely complains.
