I am not quite ready to jump in and start buying 'real' lighting equipment...but just in the 'toying around' stage for now.

So 'What if'...I was to use a spare bedroom for a practice studio...and 'What if' I was to try some 'home-made' lighting units, both portable and mounted, what would be the best type of bulb to use?

I'm thinking abaout removing the ceiling light fixture that is in there now, and putting up some type of track lighting unit. (Don't roll your eyes...I'm just wanting to experiment).

So what type of bulbs would be best...from wattage size to 'white' bulbs, etc....

I so want to go take a class/workshop somewhere and learn more about all this.

Thanks for the suggestions.

(Probably should have started this with "I have a friend who is wanting to experiement around... :-) )

I use Canon gear...have several bodies and lenses and am quite pleased with them.

Is this for humans or inanimate objects? It seems that most static light sources are either too dim or off-color enough to make it not worth the expense. I put my effort into getting one or two flash units to do the job. I've had good luck with one 430 and some posterboard.

I'd be shooting people. (gosh that sounds so brutal)

I have the 430 flash unit. But want to try experiementing with some different spots and such.

I'm with RoudyRed. I played around with quartz lights and incandescent for a while and I would have been better off with a couple of Sunpak 383's to play with. You can do some amazing things with these.

Read all you can on these forums and a lot of you questions will eventually be answered just searching through the links and old topics.

You didn't mention budget either so that may be a factor. Little more info on what your trying to accomplish and types of pictures you are after will give everyone something to go on.

A Sunpak 383 or Vivitar 285HV (these go for $80 or $90), a slave adapter ($20), an economy lightstand ($20), a 42" silver umbrella ($16), and an umbrella bracket ($15). Here you have a reasonably useful off camera flash for a total investment about $150.

Use your 430EX on the hotshoe in manual mode, bounced off the ceiling for fill and to trigger the slave. You could do lots of nice portraits with this setup. Eventually you might want to add another light for the background.
