Usually done through a Java Script that is embedded in the page.

I assume that most people try to disable the right-click "Save As" function in order to prevent someone copying/downloading their images. However, in practice the images are normally downloaded onto your PC by the very act of browsing them - many people are not aware of this and they assume that disabling the right-click "Save-As" will help them. This is not the case. If you check in "C:\Windows\Temporary Internet Files\" you will find copies of images, cookies etc. that you have recently viewed - whether you used the "Save-As" feature or not.

I suppose it would give some extra security, for those people that dont know that it saves a copy. Thats bad though wouldnt it fill your HD quickly?

Not worth the time to code it. File save as is so well known these days...

Watermark your pics if they are worth that much to you.

people will always try to stop you doing the right thing if it is unconventional

I completely agree with the above. However, if you still wanted to go through the javascript route here's the coding...

This needs to be put in the <head> part of your page. After the <head> and before </head> ;)

<SCRIPT LANGUAGE="JavaScript1.1">
function right(e) {
if (navigator.appName == 'Netscape' &&
(e.which == 3 || e.which == 2))
return false;
else if (navigator.appName == 'Microsoft Internet Explorer' &&
(event.button == 2 || event.button == 3)) {
alert("Sorry, you do not have permission to right click.");
return false;
}
return true;
}

document.onmousedown=right;
document.onmouseup=right;
if (document.layers) window.captureEvents(Event.MOUSEDOWN);
if (document.layers) window.captureEvents(Event.MOUSEUP);
window.onmousedown=right;
window.onmouseup=right;
// End -->
</script>

phantom that is fair enough, but you can still right click the image and in the dialogue box select save as..

thanks for that coding, i might use it later on my partners website.

BUT the price you pay is to make is annoying for most users to navigate your website.

See, "Disable right click" REALLY PI**ES ME OFF when I encounter it. Personally, I use the Right Click to go back (Much easier than mousing up to the Back Arrow on the toolbar). Also to Add to Favorites (ditto). And so on. I think that it is just rude for someone to disable MY right click button. If you want to protect your images, try thinking of a better way to do it, other than by disabling my right mouse button.

Whenever I come across a website like that, I used to fire off an EMail to the website owner that basically says what I think about them making it harder for me to use their site, and then I never go back. How can I? I can’t “favorite” the site.

Too much work, though. Now I just never go back.

In fact most people just never go back without EMailing why. Including customers.

If you are interested in presenting your images, it would be in your best interest to make your site as easy to use as possible. So, if you want to make it hard for your customers to navigate your site – knock yourself out, but it sounds like a bad business decision.

Oh, one other thing: if for some reason I want your image that much, I will just hit "Print Screen" and paste it into Photoshop.

Even if you disable the right click they could still use the print screen button and past the image to whatever image program they want and crop it. Not going to be the best image but still can get a copy of the image. The watermark idea is probably the best idea to protect your image. Something like this. Just an example on the first picture I opened.

Obviously whatever title or name you want.

Watermarking is probably the best way to go, I hate it when my right click is disabled. If someone really wanted to steal the image they can just read the coding and download it straight from the url where it's hosted. Or screenshot it.

If you use netscape, the right click disable is a waste of time. I used to have Netscape and it doesn't work. I saved quite a few pictures that I liked (for personal use). I no longer use Netscape and not sure if Firefox works the same way.

ETA: I just tried with Firefox with my own site, and I saved one of my pictures to my desktop no problem. Also, with IE, you can just do a print screen and save a picture. Watermarking to me just ruins pictures.

Hi everyone, have just used the script above Thanks for That ::Lisa:: works a treat, however i was wondering if anybody knows of a way to diasble print screening as well. There are scripts out there but evidently they're not free and I'm not old enough to pay over the internet anyway. if anybody knows of a free script for this i'd be really grateful :-D.

:lol: Your welcome for the code and as for disable print screen... not possible.

I don't think you quite understand how all browsers work so I'll give you a short example below...

1). Everytime you look at a webpage, the page is saved to your PC in a temporary folder in the depths of your computer. This includes all images viewed. If someone wanted your images (even after right click protection) they can still get them.

2). Computer savvy peeps can just view your source code on your website and get the photo directory information, paste the location in their browser and get it that way.

3). They can screenprint if that's sufficient enough.

4). If someone wants the picture there is NO WAY you are going to stop them. As mentioned before... watermark, watermark and watermark!
