can you test flash?

You just did. ;)

You can test the power vs. the published guide number by using manual mode (manual on flash and camera) and shooting something at the correct measured distance (distance=GN/aperture) and see if it's properly exposed. Keep in mind that each zoom setting has its own guide number.

Attach a midrange zoom lens like a 24-70, zoom it to various focal lengths with the flash pointed straight ahead and half-press the shutter to see if the autozoom works.

You can test fire it at full power and time the recycle time if you want.

Go into a dark room with a blank wall, select one shot AF, then select various focus points and see if the AF assist light illuminates and allows the camera to lock focus. The AF assist shoud allow the camera to focus pretty quickly on a blank wall in the dark.

I tested out the zoom lenght and it works.

The recycle time is quick enough for me.

I AF in the dark and it did fine.

I didnt have a chance to test out the power. I will do that sometime soon.

Thanks Curtis N!

nice! I'm contemplating getting one myself. having a hard time convincing myself to shell out the $360 because my $80 383 hasn't let me down yet. i may have to just buy it and call it a day instead of convincing myself i need it. what is that you have attached to the top of it in the pic? how did you flash the shot of the girl?

(edit)

What I have attached to the top is this http://abetterbouncecard.com/ (external link)

The shot of the girl was just a ceiling bounce. I had the flash pointed up to the ceiling.

Yeah we almost have the same setup. You need a 580ex and I need a tripod. I been wanting to get a good tripod for a long time. I have my eyes on the Manfrotto 3021bpro with a Manfrotto 488rc2 head. But being a poor college student I can't do that now. Well good luck with choosing to buy the 580. I know you'll like it. :)
