The ones that fit my studio flash units are about 8 X 8 inches after they are cut to fit the gel holder.

These are stored in an old 100 sheet 8 X 10 photographic paper box. Most likely you can find some sort of similar box for your larger gels.

Enjoy! Lon

I got some holder made by Lee, you stick them in a pouch then it all rolls up and has velcro straps.

A more universal solution that can be used for many problems.

Since you are in a large metro area, join a camera club in your area. Someone in the club will have an old paper box to give you.

You would be amazed at how many issues can be solved if you set yourself up for one-to-one association with many other photographers.

This forum is good, but one-to-one association with a large group of other photographers is much better.

It will mitigate you need to have to endure fools like me.

Enjoy! Lon

My gels are in very thin paperboard masks that insert into the gel holders, so the gels are easy to grasp individually.

If you just have plain gels, put a sheet of plain white paper between each one in the photo paper box. This will make them much easier to identify and extricate from the box.

Enjoy! Lon

In the studio I keep them in a folio-like folder. When I go on location I take the gels I need and put them in a cardboard mailing tube with caps on the end.

As well as the photography I have had some involvement in theater lighting. Depending on the number of gels you have, for large quantities of gels folders in a filing cabinet work very well and I would also recommend the cardboard tubes.
