I bought a new XTi as the entry into digital SLR world following raving reviews! Right out the box I noticed there is some softness in the pictures. I attributed it to the kit lens. Then I bought a Tamron 28-75 with Sigma 70-300Apo. Having the reports of the bad copies of these lens in mind, i sent both Tamron and Sigma for exchange. But when i examined the pictures with resolution chart I noticed always the right half of the image is soft.
How foolish have I been? I can even notice it through view-finder with all the lenses I have. I exchanged the Tamron 28-75 for 17-50. The problem is same obviously as it is the camera is at fault. It is almost 3 months now I realized this. I bought it from a local camera dealer in Uk.
Arrgh!!!! What should I do. Why Canon sell defective models brand-new? Don't they run quality control????!

Sorry to hear of your trouble. That's frustrating. Take some sample shots back to the dealer. If they won't exchange it, never go there again.

Yikes... yet another QC issue.
That frustrates the living ____ out of me. I've been through my share of issues.
Since it's only 3 months old, I would hope they'd still honor some exchange... if not, what about sending it in to Canon for a look... hopefully they're more competent across the pond.

If you have sharpness issues across the sensor plane, this it's quite possible the sensor is not seated level against the focal plane. If your local camera shop will not exchange the camera for you, it's at least still in warranty and Canon should make good on the repairs. If this is a subtle issue that you can only see at 100% crop, it's quite likely that it's an unusual enough defect to slip past standard QC.

That is strange... Lens not seated properly?

Color? It's all relative...

All the lenses are seated very well. It is very noticeable in 100% crops. I agree with you the possibility of sensor plane being incorrect.

Here is an image taken with a new Tamron 17-50 mm at 2.8 50mm. This lens was tested with another body for correct function. This was taken with a tripod and sharpening at 3!!

Well I'd just send it in to Canon for warranty work. Sucks to hear though. My XTi (sold it recently) was 100%. The 28-75 was tack sharp across the board with my camera.

Before you go reaming Canon, there will always be defective ones no matter what brand it is...Nikon, KM, Pentax, etc..

Yeah, that's a weird problem!!
It doesn't look like you're perfectly square to the chart... though I still wouldn't expect that much of a problem to show.
Go back and suggest an exchange (bring this shot and others). If that fails, get it in to Canon for a look. Worst case they say there's nothing wrong... best case, you get a brand new XTi.

Just a side comment... that shot is very underexposed. For doing test shots you'd probably be better using more light and adjusting to a normal exposure. AF systems will snap faster and more precisely with more light. Another side effect is getting more digital noise in the darks which can wreck apparent sharpness of images. Just FYI.

The table was alighned very correctly. Fact is I can see the softness even when I look through the view-finder too!! The right side of the resolution table is soft.

If you can see the same problem... then it has nothing to do with the sensor.

I don't think it matters... but it seems like you're a little low and right of center... but that's just my perception from looking at the image. Could just be a little camera twist around the axis... but that's why I commented. It looks like the right side is slightly closer.

Is there any damage or obvious problems on the camera mount?

Doesn't sound good, looks like you're going to be without it while Canon get it sorted

Your shots look underexposed. Your camera might not be at a true perpendicular angle to the test chart.

Also, if it actually is a defect, then it's possible that the lens mount ring is crooked, since you see the defect through the viewfinder and in the resultant images.

Take it back to your dealer, we can't help you here.

If you can see the problem through the viewfinder and it happens with all the lenses you've tried then it's the lens mount on the camera that needs fixed. Do the lenses have any wobble to them when mounted?
